My wife's first language. I understand and speak enough to know what my wife is saying when she isn't happy with me.

The British have a long history of brutality in North America
That's because they weren't pussies! EVERYONE had a long history of brutality back then. Are you aware that they didn't have things like pizza delivery, automobiles, and air conditioning? They had to fight for life, space and freedom the same way a tree in the forest has to fight for sun and water. The only reason any race back then wasn't beating and enslaving others was because they were weak.
ETA: BTW, the British were really the first nation to take a stand against slavery - that's in the entire world! The Greeks had passed laws ending slavery, and the Nordic peoples had ended the thrall system, but neither was troubling themselves to stop it elsewhere. The British were sending their navy to patrol the coasts of Africa, at great expense, to stop the slave trade. This was a half century before the American Civil War.

French was my grandparents first language. They spoke to my dad in their broken English. My dad knew some, but what he most learned was all the French cuss words from my granddad when he played cards with friends or family! I still want to learn French as a sign of pride in my heritage!

Yes and no. I do. But I've had no one to speak it with for 3 or 4 years.
I would need a few hours with some Cajuns speaking at a Cajun pace to get my ear back.
Longer to get my words.

There is no better language to laugh in than Cajun French.
I upvoted this before I realized I posted it.
Down in Pointe aux chenes a while back and after 12 hours or so I had my words back pretty well.
The old ladies were cutting up at my accent

I took German for a few years throughout high school and college. Almost minored in it, but ended up not going the International Business route. Should've done Engineering, but I at least should've stuck to IB in the Business school.
frick 18-22 year old me.
what does any of this have to do with the original question?
French would be speaking German today if not for a bunch of American 18-22 years olds?

I understand enough to get by in a short convo, and can speak enough to ask for a few different things. I also know most of the French “cuss” words and phrases, along with a few my friends and I came up with in high school

Grandparents spoke English as a second language.
Parents were bilingual.
My Mom said I spoke French as a very young child, because we lived very near her parents. I speak very little now. And like many others, my Dad wasn't allowed to speak French at school.

My maternal grandfather was a Fontenot from Crowley,he didn’t speak English until he started school. After WW 1 he moved to Baton Rouge and lived the rest of his life.Never heard him speak French,he didn’t even have an accent. He seemed to not care at all about his French heritage,no Cajun cooking or anything like that.
During WW1 he was embedded with a French family, posing as a Frechman.Something about combatting black market activity. He corresponded with the French family for years afterwards, sent Christmas cards back and forth., I wish I would have had enough sense to ask him about his experiences while he was still alive.
