Country people call lunch "Dinner" and dinner "Supper". I did this until I moved to Dallas in the 80's. I moved back to North Louisiana in 2011. My parents and most of the people I know still call lunch "Dinner".

To me & mine:
Dinner: was/is only meant the last meal of the day
Supper: didn't/don't use this term
Lunch: the Noon meal

I say dinner for any evening meal.
My grandparents always called a large family lunchtime meal dinner. If we later also had a small meal in the evening that was supper.

I have never used the term supper. Dinner is what I've called the evening meal my whole life and I grew up in rural Covington. Honestly, nobody I knew used the term supper. You would hear it on the Andy Griffin show so you knew what it meant, but I wasnt aware of "supper" being used locally at the time. It's seems as though that is a different experience than most people posting.

If the midday meal is lunch, the evening meal is dinner (i.e. Ate a sandwich for lunch and steak for dinner).
If the midday meal is dinner (thanksgiving dinner or Sunday dinner), the evening meal is supper (ate leftover turkey sandwiches for supper).
In other words, big meal is dinner, and smaller meal is lunch (if midday) or supper (if evening).
