PTO is part of my compensation package. Why should I work for free?

taking days off to sit at home and eat ice cream does affect his work overall
Well, I said "as long as it doesn't affect their work overall"... didn't I? How do you know what people are doing on their days off? Projecting onto others what your fatass would do on a day off is pretty stupid and irrelevant.

OP works for a garbage CPA firm and feels pressured not to take PTO.

Maybe one day you’ll make manager

He has work to do and he’s choosing to not do it for now reason. If you are on vacation, please enjoy your time off. If you are sick, take a day off. It’s your PTO, use it. Taking a day off when there is shite to do for no reason, shows me you won’t get the job done when it’s nut cutting time
This is a management issue then. Although you rarely ever want to reject someone's PTO request (because it's generally not good policy to do so), if there is something really important that needs to be completed, granting use of PTO is not automatic. if you know the person that is partially responsible for getting that job done has been slacking, but is casually asking off for PTO during crunch time, you can respectfully decline the PTO request and explain that XYZ is extremely important and needs to be completed, but that PTO can be used anytime after XYZ is completed or over.
You're saying it's not crunch time yet, but that you basically have no faith in the employee getting the job done when it is crunch time though. In that case, you need to have a fair conversation voicing your concerns about their ability to do the job or cut your losses and move on to find a new employee. Otherwise, it's poor management waiting for the inevitable which will cause an even bigger problem.

i get 21 PTO days per year. always save enough to take the the 3 days on thanksgiving week and the 4-5 days Christmas to new years. and before the roll over cap was changed from 5 days to 50% of yearly accrual, i would take full or half day Fridays in the fall to eat up my days
EDIT:
these days are the slowest time of year and my time is not missed. Fridays are 1/2 days for most of the companies engineers, so Friday afternoon's are slow as well.
but my workload gets done as there are only 3 of us in our group. most weeks we are 7ish to 5ish and working through lunch

Gotta be rage bait.
If not, enjoy your stress and ulcer and hypertension. It will pay for itself at retirement when you get 50-60 cents on the dollar.

I get four weeks PTO while Mrs. Vader gets two. We generally take a weeklong family vacation in the summer and use other days around holidays to extend a long weekend. Even with that I’m always left with two weeks vacation to essentially burn. So what I’ll do is clean my calendar on a Friday, take a PTO day that day, and spend the day at my model desk.
Not using your PTO is stupid. The only thing more stupid than not taking PTO, is thinking that not taking PTO somehow makes you a man.

Why should I care what someone uses their PTO for? If they’ve earned it and want to use it, then that’s their right. If someone has worked and earned their PTO, why would I lose respect for them using what they earned?
What’s the next question? Do I respect people who use some of the money they earn to buy football tickets instead of saving/investing that money?

When you're on your dead bed, remind me how much PTO you have saved up.

If they’re using PTO to take days off then they’re still getting paid, dumbass.
