I became addicted as soon as we got AOL in 1995. My sister and I immediately went to a chat room. It was fun.

I met a guy from one of the rooms in ‘96 when I was 16. He lived an hour away, and I gave him my home address to pick me up for our date. In hindsight, not super brilliant. Nobody had scanners to send digital pics. But he was legit, and only mega nerds were on the internet back then. Ended up going to his prom with him.

Used my first email on PINE

Pine and Elm for me. 1994. I would dial in with a 28k modem to State,s server. It would take multiple tries at night because it would be overloaded. Use to be on IRC chat lines. Used Netscape navigator. Search engine was webcrawler or yahoo. Those 28k modems would lag like crazy.

It was 1994 and we were using a Windows 3.1 operating system. AOL dial-up internet

About the same for me. My neighbor had it, and she used it to slooooowly download cat pictures and the like.

The first time I got on, I hit an AOL chatroom for insults, and we were ripping each other with fat mama jokes and the like.

Yup, 1995 my parents bought a very none name brand computer that had AOL. We had one phone line. My siblings and I were allowed a set amount of internet time per day. If mine pissed me off, I'd happily pick up the phone to be sure most of their allotted time was spent signing back in. I'd hear "Welcome!" and i'd give them about 10 minutes to get back into whatever it was they were doing (it was incredibly slow) and I'd pick up the phone again. I was definitely a little a-hole.

I remember watching the screen for a solid minute for a picture to complete.

Probably a music site for me.

had played computer games like Sim City and Leisure Suit Larry well before this,

My first time playing computer games was Roller Coaster Tycoon on my grandparents Windows 95. Game was so much fun you design your own theme park and make it profitable. I would design the coasters so the cars would fly off the track and kill everyone

One of the first website I visited was rotten.com, not sure if it's still around. Gruesome stuff on there.

CompuServe

I had a Compuserve account in 1983 or 1984 accessed via my Atari 800xl and a 300 bps modem. Instead of “chat rooms”, they had “CB Channels” arranged by topic. We’d sit around the tv and troll people online.

BR also had some active bulletin boards where you could download all kinds of good stuff.
