LDS (the company, not the church) was the first ISP in my town. They charged by the minute, and people were racking up hundreds of dollars on their initial bills.

300 baud Hayes modem on an Apple IIe over a phone line to a local BBS circa 1983.

First real browser based internet was Netscape over a VAX terminal at LSU in 1990 or so. Color web browsing was a big deal back then.

I feel very old.

I remember someone in college had WebTV with this giant keyboard/remote control. It looked like the future.

1990, I had Prodigy. I remember arguing with Aggie fans on a sports chat that RC Slocum sucked as a coach.

I remember the AOL chat rooms. They had so many hot women in those things. ASL. I probably beat off to so many dudes talking sexy without even knowing it.

Back in the old days prior to packet switched networks email and usenet was sent around the world using dial up UUCP connections. You would write and email and it would go into the queue and wait. At some configurable interval (determined by your budget) the mail server would fire up the modem and call someone nearby and exchange email and usenet messages.

The idea was to have a few different places that you exchanged mail/messages. That way you could accept messages for your site and then forward on messages to someone else. It would take hours or even days for email to reach around the world. In those days you could read every message intended for other sites that passed through your system while they sat in the mailbox waiting for the next phone call.

It was life changing when you could send an email from a ship to home and vice versa. Of course not every had that privilege. They had to wait for the mail buoy.

Bulletin boards, AOL, etc came much later.

BTW, I'm not that old.....

The original chat rooms were incredible. I think I joined a gang online where we shite talked other "gang" members.

The truly mindblowing moment for me was going to a friends and playing checkers on some website against someone from another state.

Yep.

It was 1994 and we were using a Windows 3.1 operating system. AOL dial-up internet and the first website I ever visited was Cartoonnetwork.com

The site took like an hour to load. I'm getting nostalgic just thinking about it.

Used my first email on PINE and Gopher systems on a monochromatic monitor back in 1994/5 or so. Good times. Started browsing the internet with Netscape around early 96.

I had played computer games like Sim City and Leisure Suit Larry well before this, but the first time I ever got online was at a local library sometime around 1997. I remember looking at something and it asked me for my email address and I didn’t have a clue what the hell an email address was.

It wasn’t until my mom ordered my first home PC from QVC that I discovered the ins and outs of everything online.
