Why are you acting like the guy in article has no agency in this?

He is 72 with what looks to be 5 bedroom house. If he doesn’t like the taxes that come with it, then sell or rent it out and move.

You’re not wrong, and I'm seeing a growing contingent of boomers with all their golden parachutes calling for abolishing the property tax for them but not everyone else.

a flat tax on every transaction would solve this and put every single citizen on the hook for paying the bills. the income tax was supposed to be temporary, and property taxes on paid off homes are immoral, especially when taxpayers are being robbed blind everywhere that we lift the curtain and take a peek.

I get paying for the services but there has to be another way to pay for those services other than property taxes. If you buy it outright you should own it outright.

100% agreement.

while true I’m pretty sure the actual resentment over property taxes is that only property owners pay them

The resentment is that if you quit paying the property taxes, the government can seize your home and evict you.

I know it’s not the exact same as renting a house, but its effect is essentially the same, you never truly own your land.

Such a silly take. It’s such specious reasoning. Sounds smart but it’s not.

Our county has a 30 year property tax rule.

After 30 years, school tax is exempt.

It only works if you have lived in the county for 30 years.

Texas sucks in this. I haven’t had a mortgage in 12 years yet pay 10-20k a year in property taxes I have zero use for. Money in a trash can.

Of course insurance is a scam so haven’t paid those assuoles in 12 years. Play a regular Wednesday round of golf with an insurance guy that will tell you the same thing.

My irrevocable trust owns my home. Does that count?

I pay over $1,400 a month on property taxes alone on our very modest home

Now that is outrageous. I pay less than that anually.

Where the hell is this?

If you are so wealthy and financially smart and an independent think how do you not know how much your taxes are within a margin of 100%?

People should be upset that congressman are paid millions of dollars with our tax money.

Can you elaborate on this comment?

CRS Report

While their salaries are set at around $175K a year, Congressman receive an annual budget between $1.85 million and $2.09 million to run their offices, and Senators receive between $4.30 million to $6.62 million annually.

Isn’t funny how they go in regular people and after a year or two they are millionaires?
