Listen is clearly the correct verb for the action, but saying you've listened to a book during conversation is odd.

Person 1- Have you ever read Ready Player One?
Person 2- Yes, we'll ugh, actually I just listened to it.

However, I feel like a cheat if I say I read a book that I simply listened to on my commute.

Is there a proper terminology for this?

I cant believe there are people who are so bothered by this to ask others for opinions.

I listen to erotic novels on audio. Hearing a sultry female voice helps me get stiff and rub one out

You listen to an audiobook.

Does it have a negative connotation or something?

I have studied the entire work
Studied the entire writing
I have comprehended the entire novel/work
I have interpreted the entire writing
I have researched and examined the entire book

You can use these terms and they will never know

I don't think it has a negative connotation, but I don't think it sounds as good as saying you've read a book.

used to read along with the audio book in high school for Macbeth and books like that. Makes it go by faster and actually looking at the words on the page helped me remember the content

Preach. Lazy arse audiobooks all for the sake of "driver safety". Ridiculous. Just keep a safe distance from the car in front of you while you're reading.

Maybe this is what Les meant when he said he didn't read books. Maybe the guy had all the classics on his Ipod.

Naw, that dude didn't read books.

This falls under the "I listened to" category and not the "I read" category.

I had a friend who gave me shite about listening to audiobooks vs. actually reading the text myself. I don't know why. The basic ability to read and comprehend is not a talent that deserves higher regard. I used to have a long daily commute, and audiobooks made those drives a lot more "productive."

The only audio book I've ever listened to was the Bible read by Larry King.

That's weird.

I reference using audiobooks to survive my commute (Atlanta), and I pretty much always get a favorable response with a ton of people telling me they do the same.

In my experience people who are paying to listen to books in the car aren't cutting corners, they're usually professionals willing to pony up for Audible or the like because they can't find as much time to read as they'd prefer.
