This has been a tradition on my paternal side for years. We clean and repaint (if needed) older graves for family members during the week of all souls day.

I’m happy the family had the foresight to lock in perpetual care at 19th century prices on the family vaults.

I didn't know there was such a day until I moved to south Louisiana 50 years ago.

Until then, it was just the day after halloween.

Yes. Repaint with either white or silver paint, pull grass and leave fresh flowers.
Growing up in NOLA, we would go to the cemetary every Sunday with my dad's family. Cleaned out the vases, swept around the tombs, put out fresh flowers. Older folks would usually cry a little bit, but the kids just wandered around the graves. Our tombs weren't painted, just bare concrete with marble fronts.

All Saints Day is Nov 1st
All Souls Day is Nob 2nd

All Saints is a Holy Day
All Souls is not.

Yote - we clean our family plot. Nothing to paint. It’s just marble head stones.

In Alabama we have what’s called “decoration”, usually on a Sunday around Mother’s Day, but will vary based on the cemetery. Its a day to put fresh flowers on the graves of departed loved ones and freshen up around their gravestone. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone go so far as to paint one though.

On All Saints Day, the cemetery where my husband’s grandparents are buried has a gathering…votive candles and new flowers on all graves, the above-ground edifices repainted and cleaned. Its actually very pleasant. Lovely when the sun sets. We usually go if the weather permits.

My Dad and one of my uncles always did that. Uncle died a few months ago, and my dad can't do it anymore. My uncle's kids all live out of state, so I suppose I will do it this year.

Powerwash and clean up the family graves. Been doing it for my entire life, we even take care of my mom's first husband that died years before she met my dad.

I thought I was old

That is some pre Vatican II stuff before they went all modern in the 1960's

Glad somebody still remembers this

The beauty of Louisiana vs The Other 49 Bloody Anglish States is the French Catholics vs The Bloody Anglish heathens who split from the Holy Church so they could get rid of their wives. If the common man was bound to his wife till death, why should some arrogant and entitled aristocrats who were so dumb and could not even sign their own name be free to get rid of theirs.

Church made a mistake in the 60's and been downhill since. Church in the South went downhill since and sometimes I feel Mass is more Southern Baptist / New Age thing.

On the plus side, out went the waddling penguin nuns and in came the skirts (now you could see knees), the smaller habit (you could see neck, hair, ears and such), and short sleeve blouses (you could see attractive arms and could discern boobs). Yes, that was a breath of fresh air for the Catholic faithful (and the beatings all but ceased).

When you have multiple plots in a historic cemetery you learn 2 things

#1 Barre Granite is about as expensive as you can get
#2 Rolled, Raised, lettering is the work of old school masons.

Simple foot stones using the above are so simple and plain, till your learn just what you have responsibility for. May be the "Last of the Mohicians" on this as the younger set has no respect for the dead and traditions handed down for centuries to connect you with your ancestors.

Even with perpetual care, the next generation has to do their job no matter how well funded it was in the past. It is why Trust Banks (including one in Louisiana) have lost their way, concerned about fees more that the physical and historical issues left to future generations. Aside from this holiday from the Church, we had multiple Events in the year when family in town was expected to gather and spend part of the day with their dead. This one simple example where America has lost its way.

Important part of tomb upkeep if it isn’t one of the big granite numbers that don’t need much maintenance.

I’ve got three plots (a total of 13 individuals) I consider myself responsible for. My Mom does two other plots (4 individuals). No painting involved for us, but flowers every year and cleaning every so often.
