Yes. Really reinforced this with my kids. Both got an earful if they let a door close on someone. Neither did it more than once.

if they are close

If they are in the questionable zone, I speed up my walk to place them firmly in the don’t hold door zone and I pretend like I don’t know they are behind me

This method also works for elevators

If you’re doing this you’re not getting that little jog from me. If you look annoyed that I didn’t inconvenience myself so you could feel good about yourself, you’re definitely not getting the thank you.

I always look at holding the door for others as a sign of who I am, not because of who they are. It never hurts to do something that costs nothing to make someone’s day just a little better (like offering to take someone’s shopping cart to the buggy corral for them).

I hold the door.If I have a day off, I refuse to hurry. I will hold a door for another person. I have noticed that attractive women that have crested the hill generally do not say thanks.

Of course. Why wouldn’t someone show that common courtesy?

I'm my experience folks that look like this are just as likely to follow the door etiquette in the South. I find it to be a pleasant interaction no matter the looks of the other person.

I do and I also say excuse me when I step in front of someone in stores. I was raised to be respectful of other people.

That being said I am reconsidering how I treat people in the future. For the first time in several years my wife and I went Christmas shopping in town. Normally it is done online but people have started swiping packages on porches in our small town. After spending the last few days in the mall and other store I have realized no one says “thank you” anymore.

I had several people young and old just walk by without acknowledgement. Most of them seem like I’m irritating them by holding the door. My wife also had one lady yell at her to “get out of the way” because she stepped out of an isle in front of the woman pushing a buggy down the main walkway. Once she realized she stepped out in front of someone she quickly stepped back into the isle we were on.

I’m over it

That's how bad manners will keep getting worse. The solution is not to act like them.

When people are rude I keep my manners intact, in fact I turn it up a notch. When people don't say thank you or acknowledge a pleasantry like a door opened, I tell them "to have a nice day." Most of them time I will then get a "Thank you." That could even improve that person's manners on their next encounter, you never know.
