Because you never lose fat cells, they just shrink.

Apoptosis does occur in adipocytes. There's current research ongoing on various modalities which could expedite this process.

Isn’t fat converted into energy to be used during metabolism?

Right. It's just all absorbed as a calorie or unit of energy I think. Right?

CO2, i.e. breath

By mass that is 78% of the correct answer.

Most people told me it is "burned" as energy but they missed the bit about conservation of mass in school.

The chemical equation is (assuming I balanced it right)

C55 H104 06 + 78 O2 > 55 CO2 + 55 H20

So 78% by mass is exhaled and the remaining 22% is excreted in the bodies various ways.

So, in general, the fat gets oxidized and is released as carbon dioxide and water.*

* anyone that knows biology/chemistry knows there is a lot going on between the two sides of the equation and some smart arse may ask where the mass of the energy released goes but this is the simple answer.

I am pretty sure that fat is converted to carbon dioxide and water. You exhale the carbon dioxide and the water mixes into your circulation until it’s lost as urine or sweat. If you lose 10kg of fat, precisely 8.4kg comes out through your lungs and the remaining 1.6kg turns into water.

Basic science - Lost energy is converted to heat

In the body that would mean CO2 released

You don't "lose" fat. You either burn it or process it out another way as energy for cells. So it would likely leave in several forms - heat, CO2 and other gasses, waste in your blood stream which ends in urine and poop.

That's my guess. I used to know the full krebs and other cellular energy cycles, but that shite is long gone from my memory.

Sadly, I believe you. Doctors are woefully uneducated on nutrition. Our medical system spends too much time fixing people once they are broken and not enough time on preventative medicine

Actually, she did, it was the BIL and SIL that did not. My wife actually explained it to them but went into the hormonal breakdown to triglycerides and the oxidation in the blood stream.

Both being cyclists, nutrition is a hobby within a hobby for us. Just last night we were having a discussion about nitrate loading with beetroot shots as a vasodilator to reduce lactic acid burn.
