I had a cousin make an attempt that resulted in an extended hospital stay and then non-voluntary admission to a mental health institute. I know the mental health aspect of it all, but I still don't have much sympathy for someone that takes there own life. For whatever reason they have, they chose to do so. I do, however, have much sympathy for all those they leave behind.

1 uncles, 3 guys from high school, and 1 guy from the Marines. All of of the blue, and you learn to cope but will always suck when you something reminds you of them.

A buddy of mine worked for MetLife. He sold life insurance (among other things) and ever once in a while someone would jokingly ask if it paid off on suicide. He had to tell them that there was a one year exclusion for such. Usually took it as a joke and never gave it a second thought.
One day a guy that worked in his office got a call from a client checking on his exact 1-year anniversary... that client shot himself the next morning.
My buddy said he'd always heard stories like that and usually brushed them off as bs. Then when he saw it in his office his opinions changed. I asked him what he would do if one of his clients called and asked him... he said he was thankful that he never had to deal with that.

Yes very recently. 13 years old. It's a very disturbing issue in the U.S. fueled by social media.

Very very sad thing.
We've got to improve our entire societal attitude toward mental illness and treatment.
For the survivors/loved ones, a strive toward peace and acceptance of the act as the result of a troubled mind and not something encompassing them or systemic or hereditary.
You nailed it. Unfortunately it doesn't even seem to be on the radar. Privately funded groups cannot cope with the volume.

My 24 year old sister took her life 3 years ago. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with. I talked to her all morning that day and she seemed fine. It's my biggest regret in life that I wasn't able to save her or realize how bad she was struggling.
Condolences. I lost my only sibling to cancer at age 23. It was devastating to me. I can relate to what you went thru.

If so, have you found peace about it?
No. But you keep moving on with your life and think about it less and less.

My aunt did it. It was quite a shock and I still think about it from time to time. I feel horrible for her children, although they were grown at the time.

Yes, but we are no longer on speaking terms.

thee person they hate the most is the one they hurt the least. was a buddy in college. A guy I thought REALLY had his shite together. Everything I thought was important at 19, he had in spades. Dude was a college cocksman. Made zero sense to my 19 year old brain.

Hardly knew a guy renting room in same big house. Someone said to him "if i was as big a frickup as you i would kill myself". Paraphrased.
He hung himself two weeks later.
I went to the guy who said it and asked him to apologize to family and friends. He claimed he never said it.
Close relative did assisted suicide. They made peace with family as best they could. Some did not approve. Most did.
I would probably fast so no one had guilt about "process".
I have a theory that many norse and wild west tough guys were suffering so much before ama drugs they didnt care if they died in battle.

Yes. Over nothing.
He wasn't sad or depressed. Just terrified.
Miss him.

My BIL shot himself about 15 years ago. Horrible thing for us to go through. Did it right before my son's birthday. I got the call from my FIL after it happened and I had to break the news to my wife. One of the most difficult things I've ever experienced.

I went to the Bears-Vikings game with him after 9/11. Poor kid stuttered, but had a great laugh.

Well, now I'm thoroughly pissed off.

One close friend of mine killed himself. I never found out why exactly. The thing that bothered me for a long time was that I wondered if I did something wrong for him to not feel like he could reach out to me to talk about his situation.
Another guy I knew was addicted to gambling. Over the period of a few years, he got treatment more than once but couldn't shake it. His parents were very supportive but I guess the pain of wanting to stop but not being able to became too much. I've heard professionals describe it like the non-addicted part of the person sees the addict as another person and wants to kill that person. Who knows?
