Exactly. When there's no understanding of money, you're just the bad guy for not spending it. Vilified. Just childish stuff, puerile.

That's actually not the reason for the divorce.

Sorry to hear that. Yeah, how someone does anything is how they do everything, and when something's wrong, it's always wrong. If she's vicious in one way, she's likely to be vicious in other ways, too. Sounds like she was the type who wanted to 'have her cake and eat it, too'. No impulse control, demands instant gratification.

Sounds like you're doing better now at least. Hats off to you, wishing you well.

How does this happen? Not trying to knock you, just honestly confused why you had no idea about any of your money. It didn't strike you as odd that you hadn't signed a tax return in years?

She would just tell me taxes were done. I assumed everything was fine. Forged my signature or however. I learned after I was audited that things were not fine lol

Her family told me after I kicked her out and divorced that she was a professional liar and had a bad habit. I learned that also later when moving. I found all kinds of paraphernalia. It made me sick she had that trash around the kids.

Part of this epic problem is that the U.S. Education system is absolutely awful. I'm all for a classic liberal arts education, but probably not for 13 years of formal schooling.

We make teens spend hours upon hours studying Beowulf, Shakespeare, Algebra II and beyond, and NEVER require any kind of basic accounting or financial literacy classes.

I'm not saying we shouldn't study classic literature or advanced math, but a deep understanding of these topics are wildly unnecessary for the vast majority of people. Even colleges don't require financial literacy for most majors. It's bonkers.

If we're going to require our teens to spend 5 hours per week on a topic, I would much rather them squeeze in a required class that teaches them about 401k's, IRA's, APR, compounding interest, how to take out a mortgage, buying vs. leasing (houses AND cars), leveraging debt, and on and on.

Democrats created the problem and make it worse every single day they are in charge of things was my point.

Yes it is pretty mind blowing when you hear stories about otherwise normal/nonretarded people who will just completely abdicate responsibility on one of the most important and impactful aspects of their lives.

Just couldn’t really fathom that mindset but there’s a lot of people like that out there.

From the baw who just goes to work while his wife robs him blind to the old widow who get their house foreclosed on because they didn’t know how to pay a bill to the successful white collar professional who blindly gives every penny to a financial advisor who gambles it all away.

It’s crazy.

I guess my excuse was I worked away from home so much, I didn’t pay attention to it. I trusted her to take care of everything. She would know how to keep just enough in the account for auto pay bills and stuff. Things like the light bill would be so far behide when come to disconnect, she would “make a deal” with them to pay so much then. After she was gone, it didn’t surprise me when the bill was several hundreds behide. It was an eye opening experience and took my trust level of anyone to basically nothing.

When I started dating a year or so later, it was almost a deal breaker how I would stress the importance of finances now. I remarried and my wife is awesome when it comes to that stuff. I look at my accounts everyday and if she needs something, she always calls or tells me “I gotta buy such and such, it’s gonna be $X dollars”. We have the money and it no problem, but I guess she does it hearing the horror story I went though with the ex…

I fully believe that the reason these things aren't taught is because the financial system would collapse if everyone knew how to properly use it.

This. The majority of the people in this country are borderline retarded.

Thanks man. I'm doing much better than she is so that's a plus. Just stacking away money for the future. I'll probably never get married again.

I almost forgot this gem. She had gained about 30 lbs (135-165) and wanted to pay $8k for BARIATRIC surgery. Instead of paying $10/month to Planet Fitness and losing the weight, she wanted to go get snipped on. She actually went in for a consultation behind my back and the doctor was like...."yeah, no...you're not a candidate". Just delusional.

Not to get off topic but when was the last time you used classic literature or advanced math (job or for personal reasons)?

amazing how women will spend every dime available but not question paying more taxes, Social Security, or even think to negotiate for a better price on literally anything. "It's on sale".

If you give a woman a budget of $5,000 for one month she will spend every fricking penny of it.

I believe we need to work all areas of the brain in children. This way people can determine natural gifts and talents, or topics that interest them. I personally love reading the classics. They give great insight into the past, and teach us historical perspective we won't quite get from non-fiction history books.

Similarly, I don't love Algebra, but I can appreciate the brain exercise of working those puzzles, so to speak.

So while I do wholeheartedly agree with a well-rounded education and exposure to many topics, I am mortified by the lack of every day knowledge that is never taught (in a required format) to our teens.

I worked with an Admin a few years back who also happened to be the daughter of a Senior PM, and the granddaughter of a prominent family. She was bitching one day about being broke. But as we discussed it further, it boiled down to her "buying whatever she "wants".

I tried to explain to her that it may be easier to think of the purchase price in terms of hours / work (after taxes). For example, if you bring home $20/hr after taxes then this $500 purse is the equivalent of 25 hours of work. She looked me square in the eye and said "That's not going to work b/c if I want it, I'm going to buy it."

Fast forward a few years and I saw her drive through the drop off at the Dry Cleaners driving a brand new Denali with two kids in the back.

She was from Old Metairie, btw, so she may be one of the aforementioned "Now Ex Wives"..... In that case, I'm sorry. I tried.
