You keep bringing up the Flat Tax and people voting for it.
1. When was this on any ballot to vote for?
2. You do realize that the vast majority of people on this board would love a flat tax.

I'll admit I feel guilty every time I pick up BP medicine at Winn-Dixie and there is no charge. SOMEONE is paying it. I'd rather it be me for ~$18 than what health insurance costs have increased

self employed on a high deductible 80% BCBS individual plan
my premium 2 yrs ago was 350/mo
my premium last year was 485/mo
my premium this year is 790/mo
same plan, I've never even come close to meeting my deductible

Sure I know people that it's worked for. But I know far more people that it's screwed things up for.
Take for example a couple I know who are mid to late 50's. This couple has a mortgage and their only source of income is a small business they run together. Their business brings in enough to pay the bills put not a whole lot extra most months. Under the old system they paid a total of approximately $150 altogether for both to have health insurance. Once obamacare kicked in their monthly fee skyrocketed to $1000 each. They tried to register for obamacare but despite their low income they still didn't qualify because their mortgage and small business means they have assets. Now they're forced into a Christian co-op Healthcare plan so they don't get penalized for not having insurance. What they have now is affordable monthly but the premiums are so insanely high that they can't afford to actually use their Healthcare and go to the doctor. The husband has diabetes but since they can't see the doctor he has no insulin. They treat his diabetes with diet and various home herbal remedies and it's worked so far, but if anything ever goes wrong then he's in a life threatening situation health wise all because he can't afford health insurance anymore.

Everyone who couldn't afford health insurance thinks it works for them.
but its a disaster for those of us who pay for them.
I have friends who just pay the fine because it's cheaper. They are being fined for being healthy and young and employed and choosing not to buy themselves health insurance.
That is insanity.

No. I've been self employed for many years but have always paid for coverage. Two years ago it was $525 but was excellent coverage. Now it's $885 and pure crap. I haven't seen a doctor in over a year because I had to reschedule 3 times and he has a 4-5 month backlog. And the other doctors that are allowed are just as bad. (No - I didn't get to keep my doctor). And now there is only one company left for the crap insurance - so they are a government created monopoly. Awesome job Obama.
But people who are heavily subsidized or wait until they develop a serious illness before they buy insurance - they are happy I'm sure.

I'm just stating my opinion that I don't give a shite whether or not your mother can afford health insurance. If she couldn't afford health insurance because of being self employed then she should have taken a job with a company that has health insurance.
This is some dumb shite right here. You know there are circumstances that could preclude a person from having a customary full time job, right? What if the only job she could get with a company, that provides insurance, doesn't provide enough income to pay for child care.
The answer to the problem isn't forcing people to take on jobs with employers. What happens when there are layoffs?

My family has to pay over $20,000 a year for health insurance for a family of three people with no major heath issues. It was under $10,000 a year before the ACA was implemented.
Are there certain parts of the law that could be kept? Yes, but the basic foundation of the law has fundamental problems.

What's even dumber is you taking his specific response as a generalization.

There is something very unnerving about the federal governnment making people buy a product under threat of punishment.
The argument can be made for car insurance because you drive on state/federally funded roads and you have to cover the damage on someone else if you hit them.
But what is the argument for making a 27 year old with no health problems whatsoever buy health insurance they both do not need and can barely afford without major changes to their personal budget?

High deductible low premium specifically for that situation

Your situation is virtually identical to mine.

Premiums up 65%
That's a very conservative estimate. They are up higher than that this year alone in a lot of places.

As a business owner, I call your bluff. It is higher for self employed people under ACA then it was before. A LOT higher and a lot less coverage. It is complete garbage for anyone who owns a small business.
