The older I get, more the negative aspects of the city outweigh the positives. The local politics get more intolerable with each passing year. It's becoming more and more clear that this generation won't be the one that fixes New Orleans. It actually appears to just be continuing the city's decline.

There is no point in debating NOLA vs other legit city. We can't win on any merit other than the cultural and emotional connection. We all know this. Even we nola lovers.

If Ray Nagin had embraced change in 2006 instead of pandering to the lowest common denominator to win an election(in addition to those neighborhood master plans being blown up), the city would be a helluva lot different today .

Nola was never the largest city

Perhaps an even bigger mistake was made in the 1980s when so many white collar jobs in the energy industry fled the city for Houston. That's when my family left New Orleans.

Then the movement of white collar jobs and wealth out of the city accelerated after Katrina. The city's economy became more focused on the service economy driven by tourism, which correlates with the health of the national economy as a whole.
