It is truly awful to watch people self destruct, regardless of age. I'm sorry. I don't think anyone wants money from their in-laws, yet the downward grind of self-poisoning is likely much worse to witness over time.

A guy I worked with 10 years ago had his first kid on the way. Played a lot of blackjack, big swings either direction. He called me one night hollering about winning 8k, and I told him to stay his arse out the casino. The VERY next night he called me and after about 30 seconds of silence he told me he lost 12 grand. He did the right thing and signed the papers to ban himself from casinos. But a week after that he called me on his way to Biloxi

I sports gamble on FanDuel or draft kings almost daily. I keep the bets small and spread out usually but will sometimes take a big swing (for me a couple hundred bucks lol) on a major eventlike Super Bowl or nba finals. I’m up lifetime on both of those books but not much. It’s actually rekindled my love for sports which was fading fast once all the woke bullshite got more and more a part of it. I think it’s fun to spice up a mundane Tuesday night with a little skin in a random mlb game or something. To each his own though.

Anyone with any ties to anyone in Louisiana knows a compulsive gambler.

All else equal I'd probably trust a person with a drinking/drug problem over someone with a gambling problem, mostly because the person with the gambling problem is likely to have or develop a substance abuse problem as well.
Point being that real gambling addictions are a major red light.

I wouldn’t say compulsive, but heading that way. I have friends on the sports betting site who bet small amounts but are constantly talking next bet.

I can honestly say that I have a pretty addictive personality, and betting just doesn’t do it for me. I like to do it, but not like some of my buddies
This is me. I have a very addictive personality with substances but gambling is something I’m very disciplined with. I never like casino gambling so that wasn’t an issue. For years, I gambled on sports but very disciplined bet amounts. Never won big, never lost big. I don’t watch sports like I used to so I haven’t gambled in a few years but Ai kinda miss it.

I am a 7 day a week sports player, but I have a set amount i deposit each month, tapping 25% each Thursday.
Keeps it where I can always play, its a responsible amount and if I rage bet and crap out, I have to take a seat for a few days until i can deposit.
I usually keep the plays small enough to not sting, but decent enough to provide entertainment.

They bet on EVERYTHING. I just don’t get it. Some of them can’t watch sports without betting.
Be glad you don't get it. Something like this is a slow burn. You start off betting for "fun." Then you bet more and more. At some point, you don't even realize it, but sports become extremely boring without a bet going (besides watching your favorite teams).
I knew all about all of these random college basketball teams in the depths of my addiction, as those random leagues like the NEC and Southland Conference seem to have games when other options are limited.
As soon as I was able to stop gambling, my interest in watching UNO vs Texas A&M CC or Marist vs Manhattan went down to essentially 0.

Of course you think it's fun, you're not addicted. It's fun to spice up a mundane Tuesday night whith a random MLB bet.
It's not fun to when you NEED to spice up a mundane Tuesday night with a random MLB bet.

I think that most people at the casino playing the casino games are compulsive gamblers. Some have deeper pockets than others and the ones without deep pockets and do not accept this fact end up putting themselves in financial trouble when the downswing of gambling hits them.

A former really close friend got deep into it.
Lost wife, multiple jobs, and is still laughed at behind his back. His parents were huge enablers.

Yeah I had a problem with going to casinos in my early 20s. Good thing I didn’t have a lot of money to throw around otherwise I would be in trouble. Now that I am in my 30s I don’t see a need to gamble. Once you have a lot of money 25 dollar bets don’t do shite, but I’m too cheap to bet bigger lol
