I don't get it. But I also had no idea how "against the spread" was different than "straight up" until well after I was 40.

I think that most men get into it to have someone interesting and engaging to do. There are a lot of high roller insurance agents in my area that love to bet on sports they generally have no f@#*@ idea about, because there is risk involved (hockey and tennis aren't something that should be big in Texas). These are people that buy their employees $70k cars as bonuses. I don't get it, I'd rather be on a battlefield (ETA: meanin vising one, not marching across the coral of Tarawa under fire.) somewhere in the world, than worrying about a parlay involving the NHL.

Some people get dopamine hits in different ways, but I'd rather only look at my phone once or twice an hour. Paying attention to women is a far bigger payoff off than anything involving gambling to me.

Ultimately, I'm compulsive about women, the people you're describing are compulsive about the "high" from winning some odd bet.

I worked at collge bar in the late 80s. There was an Asian college professor that played our illegal video poker machines 2 or 3 times a week. He drank free and we ran a tab for however many rolls of quarters he wanted. Every couple of weeks he would payoff what he owed to the owner. The owner gave the professor a 50% discount on his loses so he would play video poker at his bar. He would lose at least $250-500 a week after the discount.

When online gambling goes nation-wide, it’s going to become the new opioid epidemic. Everyone will know someone who has their life ruined by it. Where I am now, you either have to get on a plane and fly somewhere, or figure out how to find a bookie to bet. When all you have to do is download an app and connect a payment method, watch out.

With that said I don’t think it should be illegal.

My BIL always talks about this operator he works with. Says when they’re on nights, this mofo bets on shite across the world. Random shite like Taiwanese Ping Pong or Cricket. Random sports in random countries that he thinks he has an angle on. Big money too. Said he’s seen him lose $10k on a shift. Has a bank acct for it that his wife doesn’t know about . That shite gonna end badly

I don't know that's it. You can skirt geo-restrictions in many ways, and video poker, casinos on reservations, etc., are always nearby.

I think the mobile aspect is probably more critical. However, someone was always going to the Circle K to get smokes and PowerBall tickets, etc.

Agreed. and what I meant by online gambling going nationwide is that it’s going to draw in more people when it’s as easy as signing up for Facebook. I really think brick and mortar casinos are just going to become relics that stay around just for show. They see the cash cow that is legal online betting.

I don't even want the app on my phone. I would never want to experience the extreme highs and lows of the gambler's addiction.

I guess I look at pornography too much. I never would smoke or drink alcohol. I saw what that did to my mom and dad.

I always felt like if I started smoking or drinking I would never be able to quit. My dad did keep me in line when I was a teenager. Unfortunately when my dad drank, he became an abusive monster.

Sometimes fear is your greatest deterrent.

I know a few people who are always betting on sports now. I think legalizing that was a bad idea.

And i never understood why people get so into it. I mean it’s a money making scheme for casinos. It’s not designed for the players to win.

I used to gamble on crypto. Made a couple thousand. Started losing money and pulled it out, then watched it skyrocket. Thought about going back in but didn't. then it crash far below what it was when I first pulled it out.

Don't play with that stuff anymore because it's volatile and the winds are currently against it, but it was fun while it lasted. Glad I didn't lose my arse on it because it could have easily happened.

I don't do other online betting because I'm terrible at it and absurdly unlucky. I don't think I've ever won a game of chance in my entire life.

I did. He was fired from his job of almost 30 years for lying about where he was working and slipping over the border to NV to gamble. Only child, never married, no kids or family.

Sadly he died of massive heart attack Elvis style.

They found out after he died he was also a massive hoarder.

I did, he passed away last year but he used to be a huge gambler. Lost the house at one point in his 30s. Stopped gambling after that. The story he’d tell about coming home to his wife and letting her know the house was gone, he would laugh so hard and she would just roll her eyes
