Why I left my job of almost 18 years

I worked in an office with a major a-hole who was the most skilled employee there. But I absolutely believe that no matter how good someone is at their technical job, if they don’t play well with others, they should be let go. The stellar production of one employee is not worth killing the morale of an entire office. But most bosses don’t have the courage to make that move.

My previous Manager. She is OCD to the extreme and insane. She’d call me at 11:30 at night on the weekend because the wrong shade of light green was used in a report that is for her own use. If I didn’t answer she’d email HR and cc almost our whole team. I was at the doctors office for an hour once and she called me FOURTEEN times in the span of 45 mins to ask a simple Excel question she could’ve Googled. If we stepped away for 5 mins to go take a shite she wanted to know where we were going. It was the worst employment experience I’ve ever had.

She got fired and I took over her role. If she was still here I would’ve quit a year ago. When our VP called to tell me she was canned we all went out for drinks to celebrate.

What I've often discovered is that it's not always cut-and-dry on whether or not said employee is actually that productive or if they're just productive at freeloading off of vulnerable coworkers. Besides, like you said, is ONE productive employee really THAT valuable when their attitude towards teamwork and those on their team is to, "trample the weak, hurdle the dead"?

Regarding that type of toxic employee, what I've also seen many many times is what you mentioned about bosses and courage: The boss, through his cowardice in eliminating the oftentimes "not so productive as percieved, but definitely toxic" employee, winds up alienating the real productive TEAM of people.

And then he can't figure out why his turnover is so high until years down the road when the problem employee leaves or is fired in a chitstorm of circumstances- at that point the employee's boss had long-since come to the realization but it STILL took the brown stuff hitting the fan for him/her to do something.

It happens all the time, and it's poor human resources management 101.

I work by myself, so yes.
