I've had one for about half a year now in Birmingham. I moved to Nashville where my girlfriend lived, and we were planning on moving into a bigger place. Then she had an unexpected job change , and she is now working from home. We decided to move from Nashville to Pensacola because Nashville is stupid expensive, and I have an office down here. All the while all of my shite has been in a storage unit in Bham.
We have been in a long stay bnb in Perdido Key for over a month now trying to find a place to live down here, and I just transferred all of it to a much cheaper storage unit(40$/month) down here last weekend. I don't have a lot of possessions though(by choice.)

I couldn't imagine paying $100/mo indefinitely to store Christmas decorations. I'd buy a shed if I had to before renting a storage unit.

My parents did growing up, I think it's part of the reason I don't hold on to junk as an adult, usually if I don't use a thing for about 6 months I'll sell it or get rid of it. As a kid I can remember them having a ton of furniture in storage for "when we buy a bigger house", only to not use any of it when they finally did purchase a house, or it be long outdated or damaged due to humidity over time.

1. My wife doesn’t like to throw shite away
2. I like to have sex with her so I let her have a storage unit

We have a lot more than you realize. Some of it is over seven feet tall and made of solid wood. Going up and down three flights a dozen times is for the birds.

I have one for my boat, and all the boat gear. That takes up too much space, and I like to have all the cars fit in a neat and organized garage.

I moved a bunch of stuff out of my house to prep it to sell. It didn’t sell, and I wasn’t moving everything back in. I kept it for 2 years and then got rid of it when we eventually did sell.

No...we have ridiculous storage in my 3,200 sf detached garage. And a 15 x 15 room sealed off room in the barn. I do pay a king's ransom in taxes.

Got tired of a monthly fee and bought a shipping container for seasonal clothes, holiday decorations and the kids stuff till they get their own place.

I have my deceased mil furniture in my house, my wife (no pics) wants to keep it. Maybe I need one.
Enquiring minds want to know whether you'll put the wife or the furniture in the storage unit, or both, or whether you'll move into.

Friends in NOLA were told by their real estate agent that they had to move all the stuff out that they had moved in when her parents died.
It went into storage as well as other stuff so their smallish uptown cottage looked larger, sold faster, and then they moved everything into their next significantly larger house. When they sold it, all the stuff was moved to his grandmothers house two states away, they were living in separate states, and she took what she wanted and left the rest behind with the divorce.

Had to store a vehicle in one until it was time to move into my house.

Storage without climate control is perplexing to me. If your stuff isn't worth climate control, sell it or toss it.

It's the American dream - have so much shite that you can't fit it in your house you can't afford, so you rent a storage unit!
I've been looking into one myself...

Unrelated, but I've thought that storage units, as a business, was a pretty good indicator of overall economic wellness of an area. I mean, we have so much shite, that we pay someone else, to store it. I'm not talking about temporary storage in between moves. Permanent shite storage.

I’ve never understood guys that pay over $200/month to store a boat.

Yes. I sold my house a few months ago and am trying to decide where I want to live next. Pisses me off since I’m paying over $500 a month for two units but hopefully it’s coming to an end.
The units have 80% of what I own in them.

My mother has one that we need to clean out. Do they have a service that just throws everything away for you after you finish going through it?

There should be a junk hauler that will take care of it. We have one local that I see 3-4 times a month at my storage place.
I have a unit for my ebay stuff but we moved into house where we can get a shed so I am working towards that. We do have a unit for personal stuff from when we moved. It was an unexpected move and we had to put our old house on the market a good three weeks earlier than we planned. We didnt have the time to properly go through everything so we ended up throwing most of it into the storage unit to stage the old house. Going through it now that the weather is nicer and should be done in a month or so.
