My dad came from a not so wealthy family of nine, seven kids of which four were boys and he was the youngest.

He grew up eating with his left arm around his plate to prevent the others from stealing his food.

Once he got older, married and semi successful he could never break this habit.

I have a good one.

In nursury school one day, 3 or 4 years old, at lunch, I was really thirsty and drank my whole cup of koolaid as soon as I sat down. After eating my lunch, I was thirsty again and asked for more. They said no. They wouldnt even offer me water.

To this day, I never touch my drink until I am finished eating. I don't eat, sip, eat, sip. I eat until Im done, then drink my beverage.

Eta- nursury school in early 80's not like preschools today. shite, my three year old is already doing sign language and speaking Spanish and doing math. Would be a great spinoff topic.

I didn't grow up poor, but decided when I left for college I was going to do it on my own and never move back (I'm not sure it was the right decision, but since my early teens I was fairly independent) to my parents. I never asked my parents for assistance as I wanted to do it on my own.

After school it was hard making ends meet starting out in my career. We lived poor until for about a decade. We had a decent starter house, but were definitely house poor. If I wanted a $60 video game, it was me putting away $10 a paycheck to get it. I'd buy a shirt or jeans and wear them til they fell apart.

Once we were more established and married we decided my wife would stay home with the kids. Nothing really changed as we were used to scrapping by and just continued on.

Now that I've grown in my career I still find myself getting anxious at spending money. I bought my wife a car last year and thought I was going to have a panic attack.

We are better off than most in the world and am extremely grateful, but I can't help think about money with almost every purchase. Luckily for me my wife has no such qualms and spends like it's going out of style (IMHO).
