Do you have any unusual habits that resulted from your childhood?

Growing up, money was often tight. As a result, I find myself avoiding wearing/using new things that I purchase for myself in order to "save" them. Spending money gives me anxiety.

Once in grade school, I was bought some new shoes. I coveted them so much that I would never wear them for fear of them getting messed up. When I finally had an occasion I deemed special enough to wear them, I had outgrown them.

I have several stories like this.

Pretty much the same. We were working poor, didn't have a lot. I make the most of what I have and don't like to waste.

I never eat sitting down unless in car or restaurant.

We were always on the move growing up going to different extra curricular activities between my three siblings and I we never had time for a sit down dinner.

My entire family still eats standing in kitchen or on couch while at home.

We weren't poor at all but dad was very frugal. I believe in living below my means.

Same. Gifts and gift cards also give me anxiety. I can't stand to see them wasted or not used in full. Hate to waste.

This, although I had a middle class childhood. I think I inherited it from my grandfather. He had bottles of unopened aftershave and a drawer full of dress shirts he'd never worn that he'd received as gifts.

I wear clothes until they have holes in them. And it's almost painful to watch the miles going up on my truck odometer.

Went to catholic school where we wore khaki uniforms. The only individual chlothing expression you could have were tennis shoes. Nike’s and Reebok’s were the in shoes at the time My family owned a grocery store in a small town that had a chlothing section and they sold tennis shoes, so I had to get the ones there, which were Kangeroos.

I got clowned mercilously about them, so I’m overly brand conscious to this day. I won’t let my kids wear “cheap” brands of anything that they’ll end up wearing in a social setting. We don’t overspend on it... my wife shops sales and outlet malls etc. but always name brands.

A friend at our camp years ago told us a neat story. After he moved out on his own, he lived in an apartment for about 10 years. His bathroom mirror was low (this guy was like 6’ 3”) and he had to bend over to shave. He said to this day, even though he doesn’t have to, he still bends over to shave.

I’m just the opposite on this. I like to see how many I can get. I’ve gotten over 350k before.

Damn. That would've been an awesome haul for me as a kid.

Dipping, my buddies and I all thought we were cool as 14-15 yr olds, I've never been able to put it down.

Another: my name starts with an R and I had a speech impediment I went to therapy for in first and second grade. My R's sounded like W's. So hamburger sounded like hambuwgew.

Imagine having your name start with a letter you can't pronounce. I used a gesture to clarify to people how to say my name.

To this day, at 38, I still use the gesture when meeting new people even though I don't have to. It's instinct now.

Its funny because fast fashion took over for a long while and name brands lost their youthful following.

Back on the upswing, but unfortunately it is going hard to the other side of the spectrum with brands like Gucci being whats "in".

I guess the main trait I've inherited are the following 2.
1: My Mom worried constantly about something. Because of that I have a hard time relaxing and enjoying things.
It was implied that if you didn't worry about something then you're being irresponsible.
2: Its hard for me to do some things on school/work nights. You don't go out to eat, go to the theater or watch movies at home or attend parties on those nights. Of course I still do them on weeknights but it doesn't set well with me.
3: I hate to waste food or drink. I guess I get that from my dad who grew up during the great depression. His family was dirt poor during that time (think Angela's Ashes) and it wasn't unusual to get food that had been thrown in the trash. My mom's family, OTOH was pretty well off even during the depression.

It's really amazing how hard it is to shake things off like that.

I'm actually the opposite. Most of the habits I got from family, I've entirely broken away from.

My parents were big on us eating dinner at the table, but no TV or anything on in other rooms of the house. I didn't notice how awkward it is until my SO told me how much he hates eating over there. Everyone sits in complete silence and you can hear the sounds of eating. I insist on background music/TV when I go over now.

I wish everyone did this. I hate conversation during meals.

I get irrationally angry when I hear the sounds of someone eating food, so it is torture. Misophonia, I believe it is called.

Another one I just remembered. My parents did not buy "junk" (snacks) of any kind. We always had 1 bag of chips and 1 box of Debbie cakes in the pantry, but they were for my Dad's work lunch and we were not allowed to take them very often.

As a result, I do not snack at all. I eat 2 meals a day - lunch and dinner. And nothing else. Not even a scoop of ice cream or a breakfast bar.

My absolute worst nightmare. Even if I eat alone it can't be in silence. We always watch TV while we eat.
