Scalpers provide a service to me, I don't pay attention to when tickets go on sale or even plan ahead for things like football games and concerts.
I know there will be tickets available from scalpers if I decide to go to those events 3 days out or even the day of sometimes.

That's the service they provide. I think the guy you are responding to raises some good points about people buying up the tickets, but there's no way they have enough buying power to manipulate market beyond demand. I do think there is some gray area on this topic, but it's not because scalpers don't provide a service or product, because they clearly do (liquidity). LucasP is getting a bunch of upvotes for misunderstanding this issue, but then again, so do people who think oil companies have deliberately been gouging them at the pump for the past 10 years.

It's annoying when scalpers or brokers acquire tickets to events that would have sold out easily on public sales alone. That is objectionable, as it simply builds in a layer of profit for someone who denied fans the ability to acquire tickets from the outset. Sure, they beat the fans to the tickets, but in that setting they're not taking on much additional risk or serving the purpose of helping out late deciders, they're just marking up something someone might have purchased 30 minutes later.
But yes, in general I agree that scalpers and brokers have some value.

So what's the answer? Making tickets available to scalpers only after fans have had opportunity to buy them? That would provide the service that yellowfin was talking about and still not be a completely artificially inflated demand. I'm just not seeing who benefits from scalping other than scalpers. And providing liquidity on a no risk investment is hardly worth an eight fold mark up.

I have some stuff I'm working on. The wife and I do some penterest shite and she post it on FB. Everyone wants to buy the stuff. I've been stockpiling some things and plan to hit it pretty hard and try to sell some things after I'm done with the few projects I have going on in my house. I'd like to at least get back what I put into power tools (about $600 all bought used off of Craigslist) over the past year. I have a source for all the pallets I could use.

If they are taking that much of the alleged 8x markup, then the original seller is an idiot. I agree with Pettifoger on the box office thing, but I don't think it's unreasonable for people to be compensated for the trouble and risk they take on. I certainly don't have a problem with those guys hustling on campus to try to sell tickets. They are busting their arse like any salesman and taking on risk, allowing people who want to go to the game to go. And the value that they provide is exactly what a broker provides in any market, and isn't that different from a retailer.

I picked up a small consulting job recently. Monthly 30min phone calls about the industry. It yields $6k extra a year. Totally worth it to me.

I couldn't agree more. Those guys are buying up unwanted tickets and getting them to people who will use them. They're doing a good thing and being compensated for it.
Buying them in bulk from the ticket provider for the sole purpose of selling them at a mark up benefits no one except the scalper. And it's a dick move.

My wife is a painter, and I do woodworking as a hobby, I've built some furniture and sold it, and some custom framework for her paintings. We probably generate and extra 10-20k per year with our hobbies.
