20% here unless its really bad.

Mainly because the math is so easy

$65.89 meal? Move the decimal to 6.59 and double it.

I do that, then round up to the whole dollar. Not because I'm trying to 'over tip', I just like whole numbers

ETA: I've been to dinner with some people who 'don't tip on alcohol'...What kinda shite is that? It's not like they ordered a $100 bottle of wine. They had a couple cocktails and maybe a couple glasses of wine.

I only tip well at restaurants I go to regularly. If you are a repeat customer they remember the good tippers and usually you get excellent service.

If I am passing through 10% is my standard.

You look at their tickets to see what they tip?

If you go to a sit down restaurant your tip should never be below $5, even if you got a $7 salad and a water. 20% or more unless that doesn't at least equal $5.

I hate the tipping system but that's just the way it is. It would be great if US culture would change but I don't see that happening any time soon.

This is why tipping is dumb.

Pay your employees like the rest of the working world and shite like this can be avoided.

No.

I'm "that friend."

Partially to fight the stereotype of black people not tipping well.

Mostly because I don't like that certain industries rely on tipping to obfuscate the fact that they pay the tippees lower wages. Would rather be charged a fair price and not be expected to foot the bill for their shortcomings with their own employees. Additionally, as a former food service industry worker, I know firsthand how difficult it is for even the most well-meaning person to provide absolutely 5-star service every single transaction. People aren't robots. Easy to catch a good person on a bad day--I don't know what's going on in their life, but maybe a bigger tip than they're expecting will help them out emotionally or motivationally.

Got this fella in my group of friends who consistently tips 35-40% every time we eat out
How would you know this?

I never pay any attention to what my friends bills are or how much they tip, whether we split or not.

But last night we get a bill that can't be split and he picks it up and we agree to just venmo him our parts. $43 between the three of us, he tips $15 and has us pay as if we each tipped $5. This is BWW so the service wasn't exactly blow your pants off good either.
3 dudes ate dinner at BWW for $43?

Really bad service (if I have to talk to a manager) gets 10%.
YOu say that like it happens from time to time.

I can't think of any time I've ever had to ask for a manager at a restaurant.

Anyone who is the type that has to ask for the manager periodically, that's probably on you.
