I have a friend who used to be a waiter and she over-tips constantly. I also waited tables and I tip 20% and will go above a little for incredible service. But giving 40% is just showing off and throwing away your money. She tries to tip pizza delivery drivers $10. It drives us crazy, especially because the girl has absolutely no money as it is.

Mother frick. A whole $5
You must shite a brick when everyone splits a bill, and you had the cheapest meal
After a round of golf with Bandit recently, I got a text about our bill. He picked up the tab, and left like a 45% tip.
He sent me a picture of the email from Capital One making sure that he intended to leave such a generous tip and that he was not a fraud victim
The picture had the caption "frickin tequila"

I have a buddy that way overtips at bars esp if the waitress is hot. It's not like he has a chance with her or even makes a move, but if the bartender is hot he'll always blow it up. Typically tips around 50%.

I tip more because my wife and friends are a pan in the arse--they never can order easy and they work a poor server to death.

$65.89 meal? Move the decimal to 6.59 and double it

a MMF 3way situation can get very gay very fast without tip coordination.

Lemme get this straight.
Your plan would have been to tip your server 20% of $43, or $8.60.
In your scenario, everyone would have tipped $2.87.
In real life, though, you are being asked to tip $5.00.
In case your math skills are bad, that's a difference of $2.13.
Two whole dollars and thirteen cents.
I just wasted that much of my company's productivity writing this post.

This.
Why make it all complicated by saying "you owe $17.20" when it's just easier to say $20.
If these are buddies you go out with a lot it all evens out in the end. Just pick up the next one if it matters that much.

Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food, I can drive a taxi, I can and do cut my own hair. I did, however, tip my urologist. Because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.
