I think a lot of people don't really know about Lincoln.
Quote: "He failed in business in '31. He was defeated for state legislator in '32. He tried another business in '33. It failed. His fiancee died in '35. He had a nervous breakdown in '36. In '43 he ran for congress and was defeated. He tried again in '48 and was defeated again. He tried running for the Senate in '55. He lost. The next year he ran for Vice President and lost. In '59 he ran for the Senate again and was defeated. In 1860, the man who signed his name A. Lincoln, was elected the 16th President of the United States. The difference between history's boldest accomplishments and its most staggering failures is often, simply, the diligent will to persevere."

I don't believe he was a good president, nor should he have been a candidate for POTUS.

I'm sick of hearing about race relations. As soon as I hear the word race, everything following it is blocked out and I move on to something else.

Yes but the main benefit is it would have allowed conservatives and liberal progressives to go their separate political paths. And while our nation is not technically divided into 2 countries there is most definitely a socio-political divide that can be traced all the way back to the War of Northern Aggression.

Isn't your second sentence doing exactly what your first sentence claims is bad for race relations?

Ethnicity and race are two totally different things.

Untrue, He had a one off job delivering a load of cargo to New Orleans. This interaction led to the relationship where he began the General Store.

Untrue, This is the general store I referenced. He waited a year, business was slow, he sold his shares. It didn't go under. You were also careful to leave out that this is also the period of his life where he taught himself law and became a practicing lawyer.

quote:

His fiancee died in '35. He had a nervous breakdown in '36

OK, his mom dies of milk sickness when he was a child, then his sister died in childbirth, then his first love and fiancee dies and the guy has a nervous breakdown. If anything that is a testament to how much he preserved throughout his life. Who wouldn't be depressed?

All of the political contests he lost are unimportant. He won the presidency, so obviously he could campaign.

Is the person writing this article trying to say that Lincoln was uneducated? Have you read any of his speeches? This writer seems biased. Lincoln was brilliant

If you're asking whether the USA would ally itself with the CSA and wondering if European allies would have wanted to, then I think the answer is yes. They would have been happy to work with anybody who was willing to help, as evidenced by the alliance with USSR during the war.

Well, let me be more clear on my premise.

If the CSA would have become an apartheid, then from a psychological perspective they would be more in line with Hitlers Nazi Germany.

Hitler proclaimed an Aryan Master race, and that all other races were inferior. This would line up perfectly with the Southern mindset since most of them feel the way.

As someone on here has stated, there is very little evidence to suggest that the CSA would potentially treat Blacks as equals. Slavery may have ended later, but a similar system such as South Africa would probably be implemented.

I think you all put too much faith in Southern states willingness to do the right thing (ie treat people fairly, regardless of race).

On a personal note: The day I see former Confederate states defend the rights of Blacks, I will vote Republican for the rest of my days.

Black or white doesn't matter. It's the two parent households that matter. If you are born in a one parent household (white or black), the odds are against you especially on low socioeconomic demographics Trailer park white kids vs ghetto black kids all the same

That was exactly my point. The problem is just a much larger one in the black community. The 30% of black kids raised in two parent homes have on average about the same income and incarceration rates as the roughly 70% of white kids raised by both parents. The main problem is that it's freaking 70% of an entire segment of the population that are being born to single moms. That is the main cause of the higher crime rates, lower socioeconomic status and higher incarceration rates among blacks in the US.

You don't see any issues with Hitler's extreme centralized government? Hitler's stranglehold on his people? Hitler's hatred of Catholics? Hitlers fricking book that lays out his entire plan for world domination including distracting america with a foreign ally?

All of these seem in stark contrast with the Southern mentality.

I will again mention that German-Americans primarily live in the North. Southerners typically come from British, Spanish, French and Irish and would therefore have no allegiance to Germany. Your scenario is idiotic

Has the point been brought up yet that you in almost certainty wouldn't be here today to start these threads without the existence of slavery?

Jesus dude. Your historical and contextual ignorance is astounding with that entire post. It's hard to have a discussion. You need a semester or two of unbiased history class.

Which high school and college history departments failed you so horribly?

If the CSA won would there be a United States at all or would it have been conquered? That is really the main question. The CSA was supported by France and England. The Union was supported by Russia.

Well just assume the CSA won but left the Union as its own offshoot for this post though.

If the CSA would have won they would have been in the war on the allies side. The allied countries are who encouraged the CSA and if it wouldn't have been for Russia would have actively participated in the war. The people who got the United States involved in WWI were people that, during the Civil War, lived in the South. These are the same people that got United States involved in WWII on the side of the allies. There is no reason to think that these people would have moved to the North since slavery was the reason they were in the south.

quote:

Hitler proclaimed an Aryan Master race, and that all other races were inferior. This would line up perfectly with the Southern mindset since most of them feel the way.

As another fellow/s pointed out, Germans were northerners and as such if the CSA would have won the United States would have been more in line with the Axis while the CSA would have been more in line with the Allies.

quote:

As someone on here has stated, there is very little evidence to suggest that the CSA would potentially treat Blacks as equals. Slavery may have ended later, but a similar system such as South Africa would probably be implemented.

The only way race relations work well is when there is only one race in that area. Races are competing groups, it is to deny nature to think otherwise. Blacks don't exactly treat whites fairly in South Africa now and a large proportion are calling for genocide of the whites there.

quote:

Do you feel race relations would be better if CSA still existed.

So to really answer your question, the only way race relations are good is when the minority is so small (in number and power) as for the majority to feel no threat at all. Otherwise there will be potential for division and all it takes is a skilled agitator. It seems for certain there will always come a skilled agitator.

I never said that Lincoln was not a racist. This is why I said that b]for his time[/b], he was a decent president.

While I agree that he did not handle all aspects of the war well, his actions did ultimately lead to the end of slavery as an institution. It was faster than simply waiting for 1) Rich people to give up their cash cow 2) waiting for public opinion to swayed enough to legislate.

A lot of people during that time had an ingrained way of thinking after multiple decades of an established system. Lincoln inadvertently did something progressive.
