I drank mostly out of habit. And because I liked it. And it gave me an excuse to smoke. And helped me pass out.
315 days since my last drink, thinking about celebrating my 1 year anniversary coming up with a fifth of bourbon, a sixer of IPAs, and a pack of Camels.

I would drink for any reason. It could be daytime or nighttime for example. I’m hanging with Horsemeat, others here and their friend Bill W. Feeling good.

Definitely to celebrate.
I have never said that I needed a drink to cope with a difficult situation.

I think it removes everything but our basest form. People who argue that it “reveals” who you are are wrong, in my opinion, because to say that people are nothing more than their basest form, that the decisions they make in spite of their base impulses don’t matter, is the most judgmental, narcissistic tripe I can imagine.
Now, if you continually return to alcohol knowing that your base self isn’t who you want to be, well, that’s a separate issue entirely. Those people are looking for excuses.
I like how you worded this.

Most alcoholics I know said they drink to forget/cope.
Oh well, my family needs an alcoholic for my generation

Do you drink to celebrate or drink to forget?
Or
Forgetting to celebrate?
Both options as well.
I enjoy the smell of Islay peat in my nose. (Talisker)
So I’m remembering, which is the opposite of forgetting.
Not actually celebrating though, so I have offered three additional options.

I think a drink to celebrate, but can’t really remember.

I drink for taste and good times.

I drink because I need a good bottle of wine to go with my weekend dinners.

I drink if I want to get absolutely ripped which is like 5-10x a year. Otherwise I don’t touch booze

I don't think I have ever drank sad.
After my dad's funeral was the only time I can remember "needing" a drink and that was in '03. I drink to celebrate but I do it a lot less than I once did. Laughter and dancing are good things though.

Part of it is because I'm of Swedish, Scotch, German and Dutch ancestory (along with a few others).
My Swedish grandfather would give me a sip of beer if I got one from the fridge for him. I love beer, but it creates a spare tire.

I like a little buzz in evenings to relax. I don’t do it for a living.
