I can't see any good that comes from discussing salaries with co-workers. You'll either get pissed about how much someone else is making, or they'll get pissed about how much you're making.

Not at all. However, at my last company you could look up every employees salary.

I agree, although I think it is really helpful to discuss salaries with friends who are in the same industry. It'll give you a more realistic idea of your worth than a website can provide.

I don't think people are mad as much as they are greedy. No one wants to feel as if they are underpaid in comparison to their peers. If you make x amount of dollars and your friend makes the exact same amount as you then usually you are content. Now if he is making more than you and work ethic and work load are equal the greed in you would want you to be paid the same as your friend.

I ain't done that but I made a huge mistake to bring up schedules one time because some people get scheduled for shitty stuff and I told some "friends" what I was scheduled for and I saw a marked dropoff in earnings the next few months because I was scheduled for worse assignments. Just a few months since I got back to where i was.

IMO, you're worth what you're willing to work for, which is why women will typical be paid less than their male counterparts. If you aren't willing to throw a number out there and justify why you are worth that number, then why should you be paid as much as someone who is willing to do that?
