When i find a spot the hens have been laying in the yard, I gather them up and do a float test. I can tell you from experience, some of the floaters when cracked open would gag a maggot.

And in your experience all sinkers are fine?

Wut? I don’t have chickens but I have family that do. They collect the eggs daily and they will last a long time, if you have a spot with multiple eggs in your yard why did you miss it? Most of the hens lay in the same spot. Now if you have 50 chickens sure I get that. But also if you have that many you are looking for eggs daily and not likely to have a spot with multiple bad eggs.

If it’s past the expiration date, that’s the only way I know if they’re still ok! But I don’t do it with ones not yet at that date.

Yes to my knowledge they were fine. But some of the floaters were very bad. Others I'd probably eat. Then again, I don't know how long they've been laying in the spot, etc. They pick some very random secluded spots to lay.

I start looking when the production starts going down. But i have big beds of iron plants and ginger stands in the back yard and they are hard to find at times. I've had to sit and watch were they go to find the nest. Store bought that have been in fridge the entire time I really don't worry about. The worst bunch I found was in the heat of summer so that was a factor for sure.

I’ve seen eggs that are several months old in the refrigerator still “stand up”.

Floating is generally not good. But it typically takes a long time to get to that stage though if properly refrigerated.

Same here Capt. Sometimes I’ll find two or three in random spots. I always check them.

Well did they? I check mine too but they never float. Even weeks after expiration.

Because your eggs are still good. Expiration dates are a scam.

Did you know that sea voyagers will coat eggs in Vaseline to prolong shelf life. Air can’t penetrate the shells which cause spoilage. Kept cool and dry they will last a couple of months.

That is an incorrect statement. Eggs have an air cell in them, you can see it every time you crack an egg. As the egg ages the cell expands so an egg that floats is indeed older than one that does not and while there is a correlation with older and bad a floating egg may not be bad.

Bad eggs smell like sulfides not easy for most people without sense of smell issues to miss. Humans are extremely sensitive to sulfur compounds for that exact reason: detecting bad food. We are also extremely sensitive to ozone because lightning tends to be bad for us as well.

My farts smell like sulfur after I eat a bunch of hard boiled eggs.

I know they aren’t bad, I’ve just never had a floater. My assumption is they would have to be pretty old to float.

That is a good indication not to eat your hard-boiled egg shits.

Why would they get lighter when they go bad? That doesn’t make sense.
