Do you believe it's possible for a family of 4 to live on a $500/month food budget and...

...still eat healthy?
I'm talking fresh vegetables, decent quality meat and seafood, and diverse food choices.
We spend ~$1200/month on food and restaurants, and I'm thinking we can cut way down on that for a few months to save some money.

Rice, beans, chicken, produce mart.
Gonna be tight.

$500 a month for a family of 4? Negative.

500 a month might be tight for four but you can surely do a lot better than 1200. Depends on how committed you are to it. Eliminating restaurants a good way to start for a while! Good Luck!

Just eliminate the restaurant portion entirely and you'll certainly put a big dent in it
I'd have to think minimum dinner bill for a family of 4 is 50-70?

AND especially this will drive up your costs.

It could be done, but it would suck.
I spend more than that on myself some months

That’s $16.67 a day. I’m sure I could be done. It wouldn’t be fun or fine dinning, but it could be done.

Produce is pretty cheap. Don't buy any pre-packaged produce and you'll save a lot of money

Eating out wastes a ton of money.
Having said that, it's easier and we do it way too much.

I do, but I was shocked at the $3.49/plant price at Home Depot the other day. Definitely not the economical way of getting food.

Yep...add in fasting, buy meat from the mark-down carousel, avoid all non vegetable carbs and it's easy...

How old are the kids? Seems that would affect the quantity you need.
I think it's possible to get below $800 for sure, but I think you may have a better time of it if you research those ultra couponing strategies. Get some good deals on staple food products but more importantly you can save tons of money on all the other things you buy and thus not have to whiddle the food budget down as much. I've seen those coupon shows where people walk out with $700 worth of stuff and pay less than $5.

I don't buy anything in a box for the most part. $500 is possible I guess, but it would suck. I think you could definitely do around $800/month and still have decent meals.

No, I do not believe it’s possible.
Posted on 4/6/18 at 8:34 am to StringedInstruments
Seems like we (family of four) spend at least half that each week in groceries and we don't eat out.

It actually wouldn't. We spend at most $200 on restaurants...more like $150.
My house's biggest issue are the picky eaters. My son wants one thing for lunch and my wife wants another. My wife also grew up always having balanced meals that were prepared by her SAHM. Every meal ends up looking like a "meat and 3."
