How many tomatoes does a $3.49 tomato plant produce? You're valuing the cost of the plants the wrong way.

AND especially this will drive up your costs.

For sure.

Though you can get good seafood for $7.99/pound at Costco. Definitely would be the "splurge" of the month but not a budget killer.

Yup. Last night I brought a pound and a half of beef, 8 shrimp and a can of black beans for under $10. We made taco salads and used baby spinach. We do that about twice a week. It is easier for us because me and the wife are intermittent fasting and do a keto diet.

We spend about 800-1000 just on groceries not counting eating out with a family of 5...

Food is a huge expense. Making a huge gumbo or pasta dish, beans etc can get you a few cheap days a week for meals. But you can’t eat fresh and high end daily on that budget. Produce doesn’t last long and much more expensive than pasta/rice

I don't buy anything in a box for the most part. $500 is possible I guess, but it would suck. I think you could definitely do around $800/month and still have decent meals.

I've wondered if we just simplify our meals how much we would save.

Bone-in chicken thigh (pan fried with skin), sweet potato (oven baked so not as much need for sugary toppings), a green vegetable on the side, and homemade bread. That's a complete meal for what? $4/person?

It can be done but there's no way in hell I'd restrict myself to that level.

Either make sure all leftovers are eaten and/or make portions that get fully consumed with no leftovers. One of the keys to saving is to control the waste.

I’m dad of family of 6, we probably spend $1,000-1,200a month. I honestly don’t exactly know though, maybe more. I have a garden every year and deer hunt so that helps. Public land hunting so I don’t spend on a lease also, and cheap hunting shite b/c I’m not gay.

Doesn't really have to be pleasant. There's just a few things we need money for (going to need a new car in the next year) and I'm thinking roughing it would do wonders for our budget. But I don't want to jeopardize our health in any way.

No doubt hunting can save. We haven’t bought ground beef at all this year. Make all dishes with ground deer/pork mix

Rice is literally the cheapest and most utilized carbohydrate utilized on planet earth...

And to the guy that said hunting...Hunting and fishing is great. But it is in no way economical. I figure with gas and everything else my speckled trout filets are about $20 a pound...easy.

the IRS standards for food in Louisiana for a family of four is $845. $500 would be tight.

Even buying in bulk, I'm not sure this is obtainable especially since you have to buy vegetables weekly for them to be fresh. Just the wife and I and we get our meat from walmart as well as vegetables, we spend around $460/month on groceries.

ETA: That is essentially just for dinners. I have a big appetite so occasionally we have leftovers if we cook something like spaghetti or jambalaya, but otherwise we still have to spring for some lunches each week.

Since I received a downvote from someone that can't do math I'll explain the valuing of the cost of a tomato plant incorrectly.

A plant costs $3.49.

Tomatoes on average cost $2.24 a pound and a plant can produce 20-30 pounds of tomatoes a year. Say this particular plant produces 18 pounds. That's $40.32 worth on tomatoes. Sure, there may be some small costs associated with growing the plant but that $3.49 for the plant is a bargain compared to the output. Shopping around may find better deals on plants as well.
