They have signs telling you to shut your engine off for a reason.
Same reasons they used to have signs telling you not to use your cell phone while pumping?

Don't get gas in a sketchy neighborhood and you can turn the vehicle off. With a twenty gallon tank and five other people in the vehicle, why didn't they pile out to go get drinks and snacks?

40 years in "gas station" business ...only saw two fires from running while pumping

Would certainly be an oddity.

Leave my diesels running, not my gassers

I shut it off, but only because my last car wouldn't let me open the little door unless the engine was turned off. Had that sucker for close to 9 years, so it is still a habit.

Guess how many you would have had if they followed directions of shutting your vehicle off before pumping?

Don’t turn it off, get back in truck while it’s pumping

Yes, because I always go inside to pay. I don't use my CC on the gas pump machine

When I'm alone? Yes. I turn it off, take the keys out, and lock the door. It has nothing to do with blowing up and everything to do with not trusting people. Other people in the vehicle? I leave it on.
This especially if it’s hot and the vehicle hasn’t cooled down much yet.

I don’t even see many signs anymore telling you to turn off the engine.

Nice to see the bi-weekly do you turn your engine off while pumping gas thread is still going.
If we could get the following on the first page at the same time, that would be great:
Left lane drivers
Driving with hazard lights on in the rain
Your go to boots/cologne/jeans
Lazy Gen Z’ers

my 2024 Mazda won't let me open the gas filler door if the car is still running.

This when it’s extremely hot or cold. I kill it most of the time, though.

Leave it running. Don’t you hear about all the cars blowing up on the news every night? Exactly
As long as you aren't being a candy-arse and get back in your car while it's fueling (much bigger issue during the winter when you get into the car to warm up with it running than in the Summer)...it's not a huge safety issue. If you do get back into the car while it's fueling, we probably need to thin you from the gene pool, anyway.

Not a huge deal... just touch something that's grounded when you exit

Of course….the risk associated with pumping fuel with the engine running is small, but risk does exist. I don’t know why anyone would take that risk with no potential gain.
