That way they get the receipt and you don't have to do anything. At least on Outlook.
Yes but I don't want them to know when I've read it. Sometimes it's something unimportant that I might get to in a few days. I can't stand the red exclamation "high importance" emails either. Usually it's not very important and if it is call me.

I'll review my inbox towards the end of the day, and send a quick reply to any unanswered emails (depending on when I received it) letting the sender know what's up.
I try not to let any email that's at least somewhat important go unanswered for longer than 24 hours.
It's usually something like "Got it. Should have this back to you in the next couple of days."
Lets the sender know you aren't just blowing them off.

It depends on the situation. Will it cost you your job if you don't?

So in other words, almost always.

Some people make the biggest deal out of the smallest thing. If I spent my entire time answering emails, I wouldn't get my job done, however, I had a boss that thought that my job was to answer emails.

Sounds like you're slacking and they're having to get verification.
You really should get to work.

People wouldn't have to use read receipts if you dickwads would respond to emails.
Amazing some of you have jobs.

There's a setting in OL that automatically declines all read receipts. As soon as I found out about that I turned it on. It ain't yo bidness to know when/if I read your email.

I mark all my emails "low importance" so the little blue icon attracts their attention.
