No, I totally agree that basing a tip strictly on percentage is antiquated.

There's no difference from a server's perspective opening a $30 bottle of wine vs. a $200 bottle, but one is going to expect a much larger tip.
I tend to agree, but a lot of restaurants now, especially nicer ones, require servers to tip out bartenders and food expeditors a certain percentage of their sales. In the event of this happening the server could actually lose $ if a customer is tipping the same amount on $30 and $200 bottles of wine

Only if they get tipped in cash it's tax free. The waiter doesn't have to claim it because there's no paper trail.

Hypothetically, if every one in the world stopped tipping, no one would serve tables anymore and restaurants would decline in value.

That is kind of my point with these tipping debates. Ex-waiters say they will always tip extremely well because they used to be a waiter, but all of the waiters I know seem to have been paid well and liked their job. I guess I don't understand the salty attitude from waiters who by and large make good money for what they do.

"OMG! Hey Mr. Broke POS, don't you realize waiters get paid shite?!"

Then why did you become a waiter?

"Idk, but I made good money."

I have bartended my whole way through school. There was a very limited list of reasons I chose to do that.

1) could work full time at night while going to school

2) make a shite ton more than min. Wage.

3) get drunk at work for free

4) have copious amounts of pussy thrown my way from both staff and patrons.

*Not necessarily in order.

Would you agree then, that the higher the quality of the restaurant, the more likely it's run by more professional staff?
correct

f so, why not pay the people at the top a fair wage if their service is consistently good?
they very well could, but the restaurant would have to inflate the prices of the menu immensely to compensate paying for all the staff that would now be on salary. It wouldn't really benefit the customers all that much. And it gives the service staff less of an incentive to do a good job since they will get paid regardless.

I promise you that if you went to a restaurant where the server was on salary, they wouldn't give a shite about keeping you happy.

I've heard of servers making 6 figures at certain NOLA restaurants

you stated why a server should get a tip out when the rest of the working world gets salary.

Hence, you're an idiot.

I am guessing you don't travel much. I can't say that makes you an idiot, maybe just a little ignorant. A good portion of the world doesn't have tips, and pays their employees like the rest of the working world. Amazingly they all seem to be doing fine without it.

I laugh at the notion that somehow most servers are so bad at their job that they need little carrots waved in front of their faces every day to do their job. It's almost like you're arguing that unless they get their tips after every meal they're incapable of being professional and doing a good job- as if a normal salary will cause mass chaos because more is expected of them.

dude it was good money for an 18 yr old kid.

not a career waiter which who you are referring to. I'm not the salty ex waiter you think I am. That was over 20 years ago. I just don't mind tipping 20%.

you need to relax a bit.

You could probably do that bartending or serving at the nicest places in BR if you want to put in the time.

You do realize that there are countries where tipping is not a custom? Turns out, they still have restaurants and they still have wait staff.

This is absolutely true.

Hell bartenders at the red eye make 1000 a week working 3-4 nights.

Negative. As others have already pointed out, there are a ton of places in the world where tipping is not ordinary and they seem to be doing just fine.

Then I guess they'd be looking for another job. 99% of jobs don't rely on tipping yet people still do them without providing shite service.
