That can't be right... he said without tipping the prices would be outrageous and the service would be shitty. No restaurant could survive like that.

Never understood why service industry bitches so much. Sure I get shitty tips. But for every 5% tip. I probably get 2 25% to 30% tips.

It is what you make it. I just so happen to enjoy it/ am good at it.

the restaurant would have to inflate the prices of the menu immensely to compensate paying for all the staff that would now be on salary.

I seriously doubt it would change all that drastically. For what, forcing servers to withold money on their tips, and for payroll tax? Come on.

And it gives the service staff less of an incentive to do a good job since they will get paid regardless.

My office doesn't get a tip everyday at work. It's a wonder people come in to the office all on a given day.

promise you that if you went to a restaurant where the server was on salary, they wouldn't give a shite about keeping you happy.

That's total bullshite. I have been to plenty of restaurants with staff on salary and service was great.

Finally a voice of reason. I'd tip you about 25%... I'd probably do a dine and dash on Ryan though.

You do realize that there are countries where tipping is not a custom?
you're still paying a tip whether you left it voluntarily or not. Some countries, like France for instance, include a service fee with your meal. Servers are paid hourly much higher than what they are paid in the US. The establishment has to account for that some how.

This guy gets it. Bravo sir.

ETA: The people that bitch aren't good at it. Really no other way to slice it.

Calling you an idiot was a little pre conceived. My apologies. But im not really here to argue whether a server should be on salary or not like other countries.

Lets say you are serving tables in a restaurant where you get paid $2.15 an hour. You bring them the check after taking care of them, and they didnt tip. Then they continue to sit at that table asking you to refill their sodas for another 2 hours while they sit there and talk. Now why would that server give a rats arse about taking care of them when they didnt take care of you. You are essentially working for free at that point.

It averages out because in those countries where tips aren't customary you're paying more for your food

Because that's your fricking job. If you don't like it then find employment elsewhere.

I have been to restaurants like this. The people still do their jobs just like every other place.

Every other business has sales associates whose job is to be friendly to customers and they don't expect tips.

Americans like tipping because we miss having slaves and we get to make waiters grovel.

You cover the labor cost of every single other business you ever deal with, so why would a restaurant be any different?

You're only aware of the labor cost via tipping instead of the cost being built in to your total bill.

Terd, unless you need accounting help, i wont be of any service to you. I did serve tables back in my prime. With that said, I'd spit in your food if I did serve you.

Exactly. I'm thankful for the people that come in to my place of employment. They have literally paid for my school, my car, and every bill I've gotten. Hell there's been some nights that they've pretty much paid me to get laid too. Its not all rainbows and unicorns but it sure as hell beats busting concrete for 10$/hr

I promise you that wouldn't happen, and if it did, it wouldn't be for long. People expect decent service, and if they're not getting it, they won't eat there. It won't take restaurant owners long to get rid of the shitty folks.

In college I started off in retail at like $8/hr. I was competent and tried to enjoy my time while I was at work, and lo and behold, that goes a long way with management. 6 weeks later I was bumped to $11/hr as a result.

I'd imagine most service staff gross more than $15/hr, if not much more than that. I think a restaurant could pay that with a minimal impact on food and beverage prices, even if you include payroll taxes and what not.

Waiters like the tipping model because they get paid and subsequently take home significantly more for their time than other options. There is no shame it admitting that, so stop trying to perpetuate this doom and gloom world where waiters are underpaid.

It's the lack of transparency that frustrates some people.

Like someone said, it's a way for restaurant owners to avoid payroll tax.

While I tip more with good service, why do I tip more on my wife's $11 glass of wine than on my $5 IPA?

If there was a self serve section, I would gladly go grab my ribeye off the counter to save the 20% of the $39 it cost me.
