I just don't like the server being turned essentially into a sales agent paid on commission.
I honestly wouldn't mind it if they were actually up-selling items. I can appreciate that effort.
What bothers me is that 99% of the time I'm making the decision for myself regardless of their input.
To take it to another extreme, I've seen people leave no tip on comped meals at casinos since there was no money spent, yet the waiter is replacing plates and picking up after your arse as you blow through clusters of snow crab legs.
Personally I try to tip on a flat basis based on the complexity and time of the dinner.

im getting annoyed with all these restaurants now with the pay on the ipad shite. Its annoying when the waiter brings an ipad and stands over watching what option you pick and the options are 20% or 22% only its a tad ridiculous.

Wife and I went out to a nice dinner last night, bill was $97, I tipped $20. I don't think the waitress did $20 worth of work, I assume she has split it with the hostess and bus boy?
She probably tips out the hostess, bus boys, and bartender if you ordered drinks.
I'm sure how much gets tipped out depends on the place.

you purchase goods before you consume them? Amazon, Home Depot, just about any retail outlet operates this way.
Those are goods, not services. You can return those of not satisfied.

I realize restaurants don't pay waiters very much, but I wouldn't hate them jacking up the price of the food and paying their employees more.
but restaurants don't. so don't blame the wait staff.
I understand y'alls points, but I had to have a job in high school and college and I chose waiting tables and bar tending... so I have a completely different outlook on this topic.

I served tables while in college, my servers will always receive a good tip.
I understand this sentiment to some extent, but being a waiter isn't supposed to be a longterm career choice. There are obviously waiters in this thread or down voting in this thread, and if it was such a bad profession, there are plenty of options they could do instead. I think waiters, on the whole, are getting compensated well for their time or else they wouldn't keep the job, no?

The fancier the restaurant, the more service staff there is to usually divide the tip out. Say you are at Ruffinos, you have a drink server and a food server. They have to split whatever tip you give out as well as thr bartender, busser, food runner.
Now if a server does all the work alone and is giving out $200 bottles of wine, they are in luck that night.

Why did you choose that job? I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm genuinely curious since there are other options. I worked in retail sales in college because I wanted to get paid based on my level of competence and effort. I'd imagine there are pros and cons to being a waiter/bartender too.

If restaurants actually paid waiters a decent hourly wage then your trip to TX Roadhouse would cost twice as much
No it wouldn't. That's just what the restaurant owners want you dumb sheeple to think.

as a business owner myself i feel like tipping is just a way for the owners of restaurants to avoid paying a fair wage and then payroll tax on that wage, it just deflects it onto the consumer. I wish I could pay my employees $2/hr and avoid payroll tax on the rest too.

Would you agree then, that the higher the quality of the restaurant, the more likely it's run by more professional staff? If so, why not pay the people at the top a fair wage if their service is consistently good?

Precisely. I'll make the adjustment as I see fit and if the waiter cannot appreciate that, I'm sorry.
Fine. Do that. There's no law that says you have to tip anything. That's what's good about it. Tip what you want.
If restaurants pay their staff more, costs will go up and I don't understand why that's any better than the customer setting his own price. Plus there is an incentive for the waiter when he doesn't get paid until after the service.

In France the waiters make livable wages and therefore there's not the culture of tipping we have here.
It also means they get paid well regardless so they don't have to jump through hoops to kiss the customer's arse for tips. Here we treat waiters like slave servants. If they're good little waiters we'll give them a treat.
Meal prices aren't that much more expensive there either.

quote:you stated why a server should get a tip out when the rest of the working world gets salary.
Please, elaborate
Hence, you're an idiot.
Let me make this clear... Hypothetically, if every one in the world stopped tipping, no one would serve tables anymore and restaurants would decline in value. Most people like the fact that they can go to a restaurant and be taken care of. If you dont want that luxury, order take out.
