Top of the class guys go on to make decent money working at luxury car dealerships. The “big” money is for guys that know how to work on the computer systems.
In other words: learn to code.

Buddy of mine is a works at a GM dealer. He's pulling more than 150K in a bad year. He gets paid (and you get billed) by the "book" hours. If the job calls for 3.2 hours and he does it in 2, profit.

My buddy is a full time mechanic at a shop. He says he makes $40 an hour but it’s only when he’s actually working on cars.

I know 2 bmw guys who work at dealers-they arent rolling in it, but theyre definitely doing well

Dealer charges 115 bucks per hour, the Tech will make anywhere from 20 to 40 bucks per hour. A Master Tech trained by a company like Toyota could make 50 with years and I mean years of experience

Not absurd prices, building isn’t free, neither is the training, the software your going to use, the lifts that raises the cars, etc. Yes, the techs make a good living, but they work hard as well.

I know some Diesel mechanics who make 150k a year.
Guys working at dealerships or car shops don't make that much. Probably 50-60k max

I know a guy that's the head of a dealership's shop... makes right at $125,000. Works LONG hours and it's salary + commissions. He's been there over 30 years, though. Since he was 19.
GOOD body men and painters can also make REALLY good money, at least around here.

The auto repair guy down the road was hiring at $45 per hour for an experienced mechanic and no one in his shop gets less than 40 hours, so $90k+ for some of them.
The master mechanics for Caterpillar will make six figures. At least one of them here is full time at the landfill. It's got to be far worse to crawl under machines that have broken downs in piles of garbage than in mines or highway construction sites.

Depends. I know one who has worked at a successful chain oil chain place for 12 years. He clears about 100k a year working 50 hours a week (Saturdays are also a required day.)
The standard for mechanics is 20% of the labor on the tickets they turn. If you can turn wrenches at a fast pace, you can make money.

I have a buddy who opened his own shop last year. Dude ended up getting a house, a few acres, and a commercially viable prefab shop for just over $100K in his small town. His mortgage payment is far less than mine but he's getting a fricking shop thrown in the deal 
He stays busy, has a couple of fleet accounts, and has a few low paid employees. I haven't talked money with him but I couldn't be prouder of him....I know he's going to be a very wealthy man in a few years. Kid came from nothing, worked in someone else's shop for years getting underpaid, and is a damn hard worker and good mechanic.

I know someone who owns his diesel mechanic service and he’s pretty well off. I would assume regular mechanics do alright
