[2007 GMC 1500; 230k]

I feel like I’m being up-sold by my oil change guy into changing my oil pan ($700 job). Says my drain plug is getting stripped and may fail. Second time he’s mentioned it.

Do universal drain plugs work? Thanks in advance…

Your oil change guy is the one who stripped it out. Make him pay for it.

He probably used an impact wrench to get it off and stripped it himself.

There is your problem. No reason you can't do it yourself. At least you know its done right. How do you know the oil/filter was even changed? And, it's cheaper.

Tell him to re-tap it, put in a new plug, and quit over-torqueing it and misaligning the plug. (5 min fix during oil change vs $700)

Who has been changing your oil? And why did they strip the plug?

Just changed mine on an ford explorer a few days ago and seems to be working with the new one i ordered from amazon. Just make sure your truck is a match to the one your are ordering.

Get a Fumoto. I've been using them for years with no problems.

This right here is the ticket

A fumoto makes it quick and easy to drain oil.

Had this problem on my daughter's (no pics) Volvo. I had always changed the oil until I let NTB change it in addition to installing a new set of tires. Frickers didn't say anything to me about crossthreading the drain bolt until I discovered it the next oil change. I bought this Timesert kit, drilled out the threads and inserted the new threaded insert. It worked well and kept me from spending $900 for a new oil pan. You have to know the size of your drain plug. Hers was an 18mm IIRC.

He's the guy that is stripping the plug. Ask him how he plans to address it.

Make him replace it since he is the one who stripped it out. They don't strip out on their own.

Then find a new oil change place.

He claims the pan is aluminum a therefore a soft metal. Blames the aluminum for giving way after about 40 oil changes. "Eventually, it's going to wear out", he says.

1st, stop taking it to that guy for an oil change.

2nd, if you aren't able to do it yourself, take it to a small shop mechanic and have him look at the plug the next time you need an oil change.

3rd, learn to change it yourself. Start the plug by hand until you can't turn it anymore, then use a torque wrench and tighten to spec.

Because he's an idiot. Ask him what he is torquing the plug to. He won't know because he's overtorquing it and he can change the frickin pan out
