Do They Still Teach Common Core Math In School? And What Is The Point Of It?

Just saw something on twitter, it was a video of a teacher working out 35 x 12 based on the common core rules.
Never really seen the way it is done, but the teacher broke it down.
30 + 5 10 + 2
Then drew a chart
X __30______+_______5______
10 300 50 = 350
+ _____________________________
2 60 10 = 70
350 + 70 = 420 25 x 12 = 420
For a kid not that great in math, I can see this being more confusing that just doing it the simple way. But it's not that it's really hard, it just seems pointless.
Is there a math teacher on the board who can explain the point of this?

It makes it easier to calculate the chance of being gay.

Common core math is simply trying to teach the average person the way that good math thinkers perform calculations without realizing it.
E.g breaking 55x17 into a few parts. 55x10 is obviously 550. So you’re left with 55x7. 50x7=350 + 5x7 = 35. So 550 + 350 = 900 + 35 = 935

Not a teacher, but the point is to teach kids how to do those problems in their head.

Common Core has nothing to do with teaching methods.

My kids went to a private school in elementary.. switched to public later...had common core, Singapore, and some other shite...both were/are terrible at it...my personal only claim is that I get stats, calc, alg, Geo, all of it... impossible to teach them.. teachers said I messed them up... Shenandoah/Southeast math in 80s the bomb

Every time i see somebody say how stupid common core math is I immediately know they’re not very good at math.
The only problem with it is Eureka Math’s proprietary words that you gotta learn to know wtf they mean. The concepts are simple for a person with 1/2 a brain

There is no such thing as coming core math. That's a misnomer created by dumb people.

Common core is asking dumb kids to take the shortcuts in math that the smarter kids inherently figure out on their own. Most (at least on the OT) would do 35x10 plus 35x2. Which leads to the ubiquitous OT 350 plus 70. Equaling 420, which would then spur an alcohol vs marijuana debate on the OT.

Yes they do and it sucks. Kids are learning math faster than common core explains it, yet they have to spend time drawing out a fricking 10 page hieroglyphic cartouche explains how they got to the answer....and they can get dinged if the picture isn’t right.
It’s fricking stupid and useless if your kid is reasonably smart.

As a kid who did this kind of math intuitively I can’t imagine how frustrating it would be to have to draw stupid pictures to explain what I did in my head in a couple of seconds. I guess that’s a risk you run sending your kids to public schools

Common core math separates parents who understand math from those that don't.
Cracks me up when engineers criticize it and what not. They can't see the forest for the trees.

'Common Core' means there is a common core of learning that is universal across the country... That way all kids have a common base of learning. That is the idea.

Not much different than homework and tests that asked you to show your work back in the day.

My criticism is that they are teaching rote techniques in the grouping of numbers for their “shortcuts”. The concepts are solid, but there are many ways to break down groups of numbers, if that makes sense. Teaching “rules” for these things kind of takes the point of figuring out these shortcuts yourself is kind of stupid, when there are multiple routes on the “shortcut” path.
