Do the Olympics not have the same luster or are we missing mega star athletes in them?

Barely any olympics coverage. Not long ago the olympics was hyped for months and months before they started and it was a "big deal" now it seems to be a yawn and meh

I wrote a couple of articles about locals who made the Olympics, but I have no clue about any of the results in any sport. I'm not sure what channel it's on.

Snoop Dogg is representing our country by running with the torch. That should tell you all you need to know.
Growing up, torch runners were heroes, not rap stars.

Snoop Dogg and Salma Hayek are among the stars set to carry the Olympic torch as the Games prepare to kick off in Paris.
Hayek — who is tied to France through her husband François-Henri Pinault, the boss of luxury group Kering and CAA owner Artemis — is currently carrying the torch from the Yvelines suburb to the Versailles Palace, alongside Didier Deschamps, the trainer of the France soccer national team, and singer Patrick Bruel.
Dogg, meanwhile, will be carrying it on Friday, the day of the opening ceremony, in Saint-Denis, where the Olympics Village housing athletes is based. As previously reported, Dogg will also also be a special correspondent for NBC during the Games. He will carry the torch alongside French model-turned-actor Laetitia Casta and rapper MC Solaar.

The Paris 2024 pledged this year's games to be more "diverse" than ever before. Three drag queens relayed the iconic Olympic torch ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, with the mayor slamming critics as "transphobic."

Speaking to France 3 Provence-Alpes, Doll said carrying the torch would demonstrate drag queens are finally accepted in France, despite criticism from conservatives.
“It’s a consecration for a drag queen,” he said.
“It shows that we’re accepted by our beautiful country. The flame passes from hand to hand, with no concern for sexual orientation or profession.”
"Conservatives have no choice but to accept people who are more colorful and more diverse."

The games have become too political with every athlete feeling the need to be as much activist as athlete.
People are exhausted.

Allowing Simone biles on the team after the shite she pulled last Olympics and I'm not watching. Dead event to me.

My opinion, there is no true rival for the US. One of the things that made the Olympics fun were the US vs Russia rivalry, creating a lot of drama. I mean, I know there’s more to it than that but it was another reason for people to tune in in the old days.

All of these athletes now compete against each other in their own sports leagues every year around the globe. The Olympics means nothing in modern days and should be done away with. Huge waste of tax dollars.

The games haven’t even started.

The vast majority of the athletes do no such thing.
If people were so exhausted from politics, you would think they wouldn't focus on the small handful that make political statements, but for some reason, they choose to ignore the literal hundreds of athletes that just go to compete and focus solely on the handful.
Weird.

too much competition for people viewing enjoyment at their fingertips at all times.
Olympics use to be what you got served on major channels and not much else. Then cable expanded and they lost their luster. Now with everything else on streaming, demand, multiple sources (phone, tv, internet) its a lot harder sell to get people attention.
Also, American pride seems to be at an all time low, especially in the younger generations. No one wants to tune in and support the good ole USA.

Having the yips doesn't make you a great athlete but a lot of great athletes have had the yips.

The Olympics have been on steep decline for a long time. I think it's lost a good bit of novelty. You can stream European golf, every European soccer league, obscure athletic competitions, etc. with ease. Our guys play there, their athletes compete and train here - globalization has taken away some of the magic. On a smaller level, people travel more, farther, and more easily and I just don't think the idea of the world gathering in one place has the same mystique anymore.
America has also lost some of its innocence I think - we know everyone's dirty deeds, unpopular views, etc. and our media promotes those (if the athletes don't do it themselves). It's just fractured the united front aspect of the olympic team in an era of constant communication and social media and seeking the spotlight.
And hand in hand with the above, there is the political aspect. We're honestly more at war with ourselves on a cultural level than we are with USSR or China or some other fun boogeyman for the purpose of the Olympics.

There is no mile race in the Olympics. He might break the 1500m record though.
