They have the same rights as you do on an individual level but some of those are restricted in PR. If you were to move to PR your rights would be restricted in the same manner. And on the flipside, if a Puerto Rican moves to a state, say LA, he has the same rights as any other US citizen in LA.
Ok, I am learning a lot.
Another possible dumb question: Do you need a pass port to go to Puerto Rico and/or do they need one to come to the continental US?
Also possible dumb question: Why did we make Hawaii and Alaska states but no Puerto Rico?
Alaska makes more sense to me cuz they are at least on our continent but Hawaii is no where near our other 49 states.

No, they just want the hand outs and freebies. They are a deadbeat island, always with their hands out.
Another in a long list of shite holes.

You've never been to a 3rd world country if you think Louisiana is like one.

I tend to think of myself as having a decent knowledge of US history (although it may not show in this thread

It would be basically the same thing, but in Mondos case, there are a LOT of other factors besides his mother as to why he competes for Sweden...training facilities, stipends, he wanted to be eligible for European competition he wouldn’t have been eligible for here, and there was a high school eligibility concern if he was to compete for USATF. He’s very much an American and identifies as such. It was just best for his career to compete for Sweden.

Puerto Rico is like America's deadbeat stepchild. The USA got a whole bunch of islands for beating Spain fair and square, and agreed to take the good (Cuba, Phillipines) with the bad (Puerto Rico) to facilitate the divorce settlement.
All the other islands have been valuable assets for for the USA over the last ~100 years, but Puerto Rico was always that 1 stepchild who made bad decisions and never got it together. Puerto Rico is still invited to family reunions, but never brings anything (never paid income taxes) and you don't really trust them to watch your kids (no voting rights). If Puerto Rico does show up to the reunion, they bring lots of uninvited guests (automatic citizenship) who start fires and rape people (PR Day in NYC) and/or are totally drunk (squandering hurricane relief money).

They are citizens and have all the same rights as anyone born in the US while they reside in the U.S.

part of the ugly American profile right there, hurricane devastated that island a couple of seasons ago, people have been suffering/going without for most of this time. no power, no food, no fuel, no schools,.... no nothing

Puerto Ricans have rejected statehood more than once. Even if it were to pass, the corruption and abysmal financial condition of the territory would prevent it from happening in congress unless Democarats had a supermajority. They want the extra couple of electoral votes, regardless of the ramifications.
The territorial and municipal governments of PR are a kleptocracy along the lines of Central America or Central Africa. When the last governor was elected, it turned out that the prior one had simply been lying about annual budget deficits. They were actually 2.5x what was reported.
The social programs are unsustainable. GNP has been declining for years, and the decline is accelerating. Half of the country lives below the poverty line, and that's increasing as well. When they filed bankruptcy a couple of years ago, the debt included $74 billion in borrowed funds that had simply been squandered, and almost $49 billion in unfunded liabilities for lavish pensions that had been given to municipal employees.
ETA - That $124 billion is the largest municipal bankruptcy in history, FAR eclipsing Detriot's previous high of $18 billion. It makes Jefferson County, AL's one time record of $4.2 billion (in 2011) look like pennies.

So what is stopping the US from just cutting ties with PR is they are nothing but a problem child?

No they consider themselves Puerto Ricans

quote:fwiw, that's not an automatic. The parents would have to apply for a CRBA (Consular Report of Birth Abroad).
Then they have a family with someone from one of those countries and they stay there. The kid would be an American citizen because one parent is American, but they wouldn’t consider themselves an American.

I get out a normal amount, I just have never had a reason to read up on this particular subject until now.
It's not like the citizen status of US territories comes up in conversation very often and it's definitely not harped on in high school social studies classes.

what I like is that they have found some loophole(unless it's been closed up,) to get benefits in PR and in a couple of states(unemployment, disability for example,) and they are able to double dip the system

Because they had to vote on it and agree to become states. Puerto Rico chose not to become a state.
Then there's the USVI.
