They are. Look up how many served in military and active combat. They can be drafted. You’re dumb.

That's because it's usually covered in elementary school social studies.

Well that’s dumb if it’s covered in elementary school but not brought back up in high school, you know, when a kid’s brain has developed enough to truly comprehend what a US Territory is, let alone understand the nuances of its relationship with the US.

It would be like teaching 3rd graders calculus and then not including that as part of their HS curriculum because they were already taught that stuff.

Idk about you but my elementary school social studies class taught me generalities like Christopher Columbus found America. Not a single mention about the fact that the dude was also a pretty big POS.

I don't believe that learning basic facts about US geography and civics is equivalent to learning calculus so we'll have to agree to disagree there.

I can't speak for what you were taught but we started learning the basics of citizenship (which includes who is, and who isn't a citizen) pretty early on. We were also taught about US states and territories before high school.

They don’t really want to be American citizens unless it suits them. In this particular example, she wanted to emphasize “American citizens” to garner more sympathy.

FWIW, net federal spending per capita in Puerto Rico comes in right around Louisiana. About 1/3 of states in the US have worse net per capita figures than Puerto Rico.

So what is stopping the US from just cutting ties with PR is they are nothing but a problem child?

Some people would love to, but they ARE U.S. citizens, so we aren't going to go that far.

But when they do stupid shite like squander all their already borrowed money and ask us to assume their debt, or file bankruptcy and still pay out $100 million in government employee bonuses every year despite being told they will likely be unable to meet payroll later this year because of it, it makes you wish we had nothing to do with them.

The were drafted when there was a draft. My wife’s uncle went to Vietnam. Is that American enough for you?

If you move to PR, you don’t get to vote for President either. If someone born in PR moves to say Florida, they can vote.

It is an odd status to be sure. But it is the making of the USA.

Reading your comment, it seems that our public education system has let us all down again.

She's referring to the hurricane that they can't recover from because they pissed away most of the relief money via political corruption. It's basically the reason they're essentially a third world country and will remain so forever.

An excellent quote that could be used if there was a game show called “Louisiana or Puerto Rico?”

Basically PR was an afterthought until they became an enemy of Trump, now we have to pick sides.

That aside, it’s a beautiful place. Some neat history as well. Some fine examples of this country’s great national park service there

Puerto Rico uses US currency, that's good enough for me.

Eta: did you really refer to Puerto Rico as a country?

Because that is part of the citizenship arrangement. We defend them with our ridiculously expensive military, so that means they are eligible to be drafted. Except that we haven't done that in almost 50 years. We don't hit them with income tax, so they don't have congressional representation. But they are 100% free to move to a US state and participate fully. Or they can stay in Puerto Rico and not participate in US politics.

We also give them billions for medicaid programs, disaster relief and such, without any real contributions to support those, so it's a pretty one-sided relationship.

Seriously, if it weren't for the US connection, that place would be worse off than Venezuela right now.

That could be said of a few states that suffer from similar mismanagement and corruption.
