Yep. I think the new Vette looks cool but it would be kind of pointless for me to buy one and top out at 75mph on the interstate

Use a Uniden R3 with just ka band to eliminate false alarms. Waze isn’t near what you people make it out to be, but use it as well. I also just use my eyes as well as always having a sucker up front a few car lengths.
The R3 is fine but plan on upgrading to at least the R6. Fwiw, I wouldn’t go below the R3 level

Uniden R7
Have had it for years.
Has paid for itself many times over.

7mph over on a cross country drive offsets fuel stops.
14 mph over... You get there an hour earlier for every 700 miles.

Are they still useful?
Radar detectors were once very useful back when police still used radar guns (the beam was very, very wide, and if they pointed it at a car far ahead of you, you could still pick up some of the remnant of the beam on your car's radar detector and know that the police were out nearby hunting for speeders).
However, these days police use laser guns, not radar guns. Laser guns produce a single, narrow beam from the officer directly to your car. This means that if your laser detector picks up the beam then you have already been zapped by the police, and it is too late to try to slow down. Best hope at that point is to just take the first side road that you see, then hit the gas and just try to get out of there before the officer can get to where you are.

I live in Virginia now which I think is only 1 of 2 states that outlaw radar detectors. When I lived in WV I had one. Now I just rely on Waze

Very few departments use laser guns. Most departments use instant on Ka Band radar on a variety of frequencies. Quality radar detectors alert on them far in advance.

Where was waize when I would get speeding tickets in St Landry parish.

Laser type radar canceled a lot of that. A cop that knows how to work one will make a radar detector useless.

I run an escort redline 360C with deflectors (shifters) up front. Also keep Waze on. It has paid for itself many times over.

yes and the top of the line models work really well
And the two I have are dash cams as well. As far as Waze when it alerts police ahead 99% of the time they aren’t looking for speeding but doing something else

I just don't speed. I've made the drive from shreveport to Pierre Part so many times in the last 15 years that I've found 3 or 4 or even 10 mph over the speed limit doesn't really save all that much time.
So your smartphone apps then report back to your insurance company you are a safe, compliant driver. Good for you!

I got one several months ago and can’t believe I waited that long. It’s paid for itself many, many times over.

This is what is true. In fact, most don’t even use the instant on. Most just keep it on unless they feel like hunting. But hunting takes effort. Think like cops are people and you understand why they would choose the easiest way possible when you can still catch anyone you want either way.
Ticket hunters are always a threat to any detection which is why the lead decoy is important. Let them catch the instant on and you catch the cop. I feel like we always try and find waldo when the uniden starts chirping.

The only speeding ticket I've ever gotten is when I was in college and was running my brothers radar detector.
