I have a 2002 & 2016 4runner. I'm good.

The only thing I will want is Full Self Driving when it becomes available. I don't need my car to do some half assed self driving. I also don't need a giant screen with no buttons to adjust the AC or turn up the volume.
All I need is Apple Car Play honestly. Forget all the other gadgets until FSD is available.

But my worry is longevity and being able to work on them 15 years after production, without having to buy expensive computer diagnostics.
You're better off not worrying about that because you're not gonna buy a SnapOn diagnostic tool for 7000 and even if you did you're not gonna pay for that specific manufactures software program which will be thousands as well. And even if you did all that you'll probably still have to go to the dealership for either the part(if its not already obsolete) or have it programed. We are even past the point of being able to do routine maintenance much less repairs to these new vehicles.

I’m waiting for the Obama era mileage regs to be reversed.

Too many unnecessary gadgets = too much repair cost. The simpler the better.

I miss my 88 v8 350 hp Chevy Silverado with dual exhaust

All the gadgets are great. But when they go out, expensive to fix. My first car was a 1978 Buick. Iam no mechanic but if anything besides a major engine problem, I could repair myself.

I would pay a lot of money to not have any of that stuff installed on my next truck. I don't need 99% of it but it's mandatory thanks to the feds. I wish I could snap my fingers and recreate my fathers 92 F150, that thing was awesome and reliable. Trucks suck now.
If you find a 92 in good shape (not from up north with rust), you could spend 25% of what a new truck costs and have a very reliable truck.
I have an old 98 z71 I keep at the farm, every time my newer truck gives me problems I consider doing that. The 5.7 in the 98 is an awesome engine.

Lots of preposterous changes to eke out another fraction of a point of MPG to meet CAFE standards. Some is simply to make components lighter (less robust) to reduce weight, I guess.
You mean like some Rams having a plastic lower control arm? Who thought that was a good idea?

I’ll say this, when Foed and GM first put the 10 speeds in there were a lot of problems. My 2021 F150 downshifted hard from 3rd to 1st when braking.
I now have a 2025 Silverado with the 10 speed and it is a lot better than my 21.
I have a 2018 KR with the 10 speed and the 5.0 V8 Coyote. While I personally don't love that transmission, I have 83K on that truck without an issue. Shifts fine.

maybe, depends on your use case. I bought a Launch C-Reader for ~$120 that is bi-directional OBD reader / writer that lets me edits the computer management. It gives a lot more detail than a traditional OBD reader and since it's bi-directional I was able to edit warning chimes, door locks, fuel/air mixture, O2 sensors, TPMS, etc.
I got it specifically because my newer Tundra is flex fuel and even though I never use e85 in it, the computer has a tendency to get confused resulting in hard starting. Dealer wanted ~300 to reset it and there's a chance it could revert to the confused state meaning another trip to the dealer. With the Launch I could re-calibrate it myself for a one time $120 device and have the ability to do it again if needed. The additional controls, diagnostic reports are gravy.

you can do the same thing with the carista app and a $15 bluetooth odb dongle off ebay.
off the top of my head w/ my 4runner:
- turned off no seat belt chime
- enabled 'long hold unlock button' on the fob to roll down all windows
- enabled the 'turn key left/right' in tailgate to raise/lower the glass
- turned off/disabled every single ECO-related alert & icon on my dash

I can't imagine owning it now because I've been spoiled by my tiny car that gets 40mpg and costs $20 to fill
I can't even remember what mine got, but gas was pretty damn cheap back then. Ended up selling it to my best friend's brother who proceeded to total it a week after. Damn still regret selling it.

agree and really wish Toyota or similarly reliable company would make a very basic small struck, simple reliable engine, no electric seats or windows or screens. simple, reliable, lightweight. it would sell like crazy. modern reliability with no junk.

No. No one wants fricking Blue Cruise or whatever the makers call it. Adaptive cruise is mid-2000s technology. This new shite useless.

Experienced drivers ed instructor here. The one safety feature that I recommend to parents to splurge on is the “ blind spot indicator “. Usually on side mirrors. I believe they should be mandatory on all vehicles.
