Or is it just an ego stroke? Jumping board to something else?

Depends. I actually have a friend who is fairly popular on Instagram and she just got flown out Los Angeles for a photo shoot. Albeit she's a bigger girl, they still paid for her to fly out there and stay in a hotel. The really famous ones will be offered endorsement deals and what not, paid through that grapevine.

I don't use Instagram, but logic tells me that if you have a lot of followers, then some company will want to take advantage of your perceived influence or popularity.

Yes. Boner reports are legal tender for women.

yes... the plug products through, and the IG whores are actually whoring themselves out to rich guys all over the globe... there was a thread about it a while back that had a link to some website where they posed as rich Middle East dudes and negotiated shite that was like whoa... some of the things they were willing to do were shocking... i mean really hot girls willing to get shite on and stuff... weird, but true...

The gf used to do marketing for a makeup agency and would contact instagram models and youtube people, I was genuinely shocked when she told me the amount of $$$ they would throw towards these girls for promotions.

I'm talking thousands of dollars just to have a product mentioned in a video/pic. Not even used.

Guess it really does pay to be nice to look at

I think it all comes down to how many people you are able to reach out to. They don't make money from Instagram paying them, but its a platform for them to get paid through other avenues.

When they mention and hashtag a product name they get paid if they have an endorsement deal

Instagram "models" are paid by the products that they model like makeup companies and clothing lines. Instagram foodies are paid by restaurants, seasoning products, cookwear, ect. Basically, they're all advertising something.

Some of the models wear clothes from designers to advertise for them. Those make a lot of money

I read somewhere that the ones with a large following make more with one selfie than they do working a regular 9-5 job.

Yes, they are paid to wear clothing. Eventually you will be able to click on their clothes and buy it directly from instagram.
