I think this is more common and is usually classified as a break up, even if both parties have potential reunion in mind. Now 4 years is a long time, usually the ones I know of where a couple together for 2-3 years, broke up for a year or maybe less, got back together and got engaged within 6 months.

Suppose it makes sense, it's probably people who have a close bond but let things go stale. They try out the rest of the world and decide they miss the comfort of what they had.

If you're not moving forward, you're moving backward.

Hope you've already gotten MONO before...you know, the kissing sickness.
Because that back and forth usually leads to that shitty kissing chicken pox. Lucky you can only get it once.

Good friends of mine did this. The amount of time they were "broken up" is gray though?

I seem to recall it being a few months, but he was quick to shush me before when discussing the period of time and "activities" he was engaged in.

I think they agreed due to distance at the time that they would no longer be exclusive but were still seeing each other, and talking all the time. I guess he used the loophole provided more than she did, if she did at all.

I recall one Mardi Gras where they both went but not together. He was PISSED! Not at her for what she may do, but that her or her friends MAY see us somewhere with some strange.

No, they don't work. You broke up once, so it's much easier to do it again. The past follows you

I don't think taking a break changes any thing but it lets you have a little fun.

Agree with the folks who differentiate between a break and a break up and later reunion. The clean break up usually has a better outcome than the "see other people and see what happens with us" situation.

My marriage and several others that I know of all began with a period of dating, followed by a breakup where we remained friendly, then a reunion and eventual engagement & marriage. For us it was a broken up period of 6 years, but that was more bc we were so young when we initially dated.

Depends on the couple.

Sometimes a break isn't really a "break"

Went on one with my now ex, and later that night, went out with my boys and got fricked up, danced on some chicks at Mike's, and went to the strip club. Apparently I was supposed to be sitting at home rueing our relationship. She broke up with me the next day. Worked out better for both of us.

A break is a death sentence for a relationship, bro.

Yep. When your woman asks for a break, YOU are the backup plan. The new dude made her squeal like you can't, but you are more stable.

"I think we should date other people" means "I'm already dating someone else."

She wants to have her cake and eat it too. And that cake's been doing her for a couple of weeks now.

Did she get all the BBC into, or out of, her system in that four years?

Think about the whole concept of a break for a second. If you truly want to be with the person you wouldn't want a break. Breaks are breakups without the official title. She be getting fricked.

I went on a break with someone after about 2 years of dating because we were young and both starting college. Lasted for 6 months and we still spent just about every minute together because I guess it was meant to be. Going on 10 years now.
