Do auto accident lawyers on TV commercials represent guilty parties?

Not really. If they think their client is at fault they’ll generally drop the case.

Guys like Morris Bart don't actually represent anyone. They're marketing fronts. You call them, they evaluate your case, and if they think it's profitable, they farm it out to other lawyers in return for a cut of the proceeds.

Well that's why your insurance policy comes with uninsured motorist coverage and you have to fill out a form if you want to opt out of it.

In general (there are always exceptions) - big advertisers are only scooping up the cases they want - and their ads tell you everything. They may keep their hand in cases they refer out, but for the most part that big net they cast pulls in cases they send to others.
Now, smaller shops may do a little more "general" work, especially if one of the guys has some criminal experience, IDB/DA or both, and take a handful of retained criminal defense cases on the side.
On the other hand, huge firms might have a section for criminal defense.
The reason why insurance defense firms don't branch out is all the damn conflicts - you start representing individuals in their individual capacity, you're screwed if they're involved in a lawsuit you could be assigned by the insurance company - plaintiff, defendant, witness, etc.

Yeah - that guy wants criminal defense cases. But he will probably also sign up (and refer out) accident cases.
(ETA: Problem with retained criminal defense cases - other than DUI or the occasional rich a-hole caught up in something, criminal defendants are broke as a joke.)

Not if you have an ortho, neuro, and a pain management doctor in your back pocket and a defendant with deep enough pockets. In that case, you have the doctors work it up. All you need is a deep pocket and they are in. Facts don't matter.

I'd say the size of the automobile policy and the lengths at which the plaintiff is willing to go to recover is a huge driver in whether they proceed.

Yep, we live in a state with judges elected with campaign donations from the plaintiff attorneys. The judges are allowed to award up to $50,000 without the defendants having the right to a jury to filter out the bs. The majority of policies written in Louisiana is $50,000 or less. Once the attorney knows how much insurance is available, he can send his client for enough treatment to force the insurance company to settle the claim to protect their insured. Rinse, repeat and we all pay sky high premiums on auto insurance and have to be bombarded with attorney advertisements as a result.
