If so, how do you trust the priest from spilling your beans?

One of my disagreements with the Catholic Church, and I go to church regularly. You can confess directly to God IMO.

You'd have to go to church to go to confession, so no I don't go to confession

I'm not a prepubescent boy, so I don't think he's really paying attention anyway.

Doesn't God already know what you've done, though?

Nah,
my high school religion teacher told us as long as we truely repent our sins before we die, we will go to heaven.
So we all masturbated furiously after that and started having premarital sex, lying to everyone, stealing, etc. b/c we could just repent for all of that later in life.
And if we receive the last sacrament, Anointing of the Sick, before we die, then we are in like flynn.

I go to confession once a year. I do try to make it to mass every week.

Yes, but by confessing you are asking for forgiveness.

Jesus gave his apostles (Catholics can trace the history of their popes and priests back to the apostles) the authority to forgive sins in His name. Not sure why the sola scriptura Protestants conveniently ignore john 20:21-23 that clearly gives priests the authority to forgive sins in the name of Jesus Christ.

One of my disagreements with the Catholic Church is about premarital sex and abortion. Neither of those constitute a sin IMO.

Old Hollywood director John Farrow (father of Mia) was married to the very attractive Maureen O'Sullivan (Jane in the Tarzan movies) but still liked to get some some on the side (make that a lot on the side).
According to legend, he went to confession every week, but to a church in East L.A. he found where the priest did not speak English.

That was completely necessary...until:
Matthew 27:51 "At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split"
There is no longer any separation...or need for an intermediary. The temple curtain which would only allow priests into the Holy of Holies is no longer necessary.

Confession is a powerful sacrament. By confessing your sins to another human, one who is Christ'a representative, you are acknowledging that your sins are not only hurtful to your relationship with God but to your fellow humans as well.
It is a very therapeutic experience and helps to wash away the stain of the sin on your consciousness. God's forgiveness is always there, but what can we do as humans to be most open to accepting that forgiveness, first by truly repenting of our sins.
The words of the Act of Contrition are powerful and not easily spoken with sincerity unless you truly mean it.

I have to confess: I don't go to confession.

You're allowed to pray and asked for forgiveness so why do you have to go through a priest?
Because you need to be shamed.
It makes no fricking sense, but at least we can have alcohol at our wedding receptions
