Right that’s what I said? Open meetings are open to discussion of alcohol and drugs. Closed meetings you can only talk about alcohol. I’ve heard drugs brought up in them and only heard one person ever shut it down, and they weren’t even the person heading the meeting. I don’t understand the point of closed meetings.

Edit: nm I went back and reread. What I was saying there was in reference to closed meetings. I had open right before that so my bad.

That sounds terrible. I’ve been there.

f you're in Monroe, I probably know your sponsor. I dislike Monroe for many reasons but it was a good place to get sober. The noon meeting on Forsythe was one of my favorites. Will hit 7 years sober in June. Keep at it. It's worth it.

I got sober there. Moved away when I got married. Really solid AA community there.

I went to Palmetto and ended up staying in NELA for several years afterwards.

A good buddy of mine died the day he got out of Lincoln Nova. Heroin was his thing too and he stayed the whole time, didn’t leave, but the day he got out he decided to shoot up and I guess didn’t take into account his tolerance wasn’t the same and he ODed and died. I believe his parents are the ones that found him in his truck the next morning. Terribly sad, he was the closest one I’ve lost to this. There been several people I know that ODed and died recently. I’m just glad I don’t have to live that life anymore

Celebrate Recovery. It's a more Bible based version of Aa/NA. Highly recommend.

The most depressing cult in America. I understand that it works for some people, but it was the absolute last thing I wanted to do when I got sober. Plus, it's full of people who just network to get drugs.

This post is dumb in so many ways I'm not sure where to start

I guess I'll just say of course it's not perfect but it sure has helped a lot of people as you even admit which makes your post even more nonsensical

This isn't true. Open meetings allow people (family members, nursing students, ect) who don't have a problem with alcohol or drugs to sit in them. Closed meetings are for those who have a problem with drugs and or alcohol. Big difference

ETA: Or should I say "a desire to stop drinking" in both instances

Most AA meetings don't mind if you bring up drugs now a days. Some old school ones will chime in if someone goes on war storying about drugs and all the details about it. They will make a comment like "please keep your share related to alcohol" so the drug addicts will just use the word "alcohol" in their verbiage to avoid this if they're in an AA meeting

Oh and if anybody is interested in going to a meeting but not sure when or where to go there's an app called Meeting Guide (the icon to it is a chair) and it tells you all the meetings around you, when and where to go, if it's an open meeting or not (most are, that just means if you can talk about drugs other than alcohol in it. I think closed meeting are ridiculous), and if it's some kind of special meeting like a Big Book study etc.

I know nothing will substitute a real in person meeting. However, these Zoom meetings have been very helpful as of late for me as a new one starts every hour 24/7. Just listening to like minded people who struggle with alcohol and drugs helps me tremulously. I'm fortunate to have not gone down the drug route because I know if I try one or all of them, I will be hooked and fricked. I've been referred to by many therapist/ counselors/ psychiatrist, ect as a "hardcore alcoholic" and they're right. Today is day 17 without a drink.

Maybe a tactless post by me, but that explains your posts from before you got sober. I was always like, "this David guy is a little weird." Just goes to show that you don't know the guy on the other end of the computer and what they're going through. Glad you're getting better.
