Yes they do & it’s the way I always kill ant mounds. Grab a shovel and get a scoop from one pile to put on another one. Then get some from that pile and put it on the first pile.
My daddy owned a pest control company for 30yrs & taught me this.
ETA... oh and if you look close or get a magnifying glass you can see them stand on their hind legs and battle each other.

My FIL claims it works.
He'll shovel one ant mound and dump it on another and swears that kills off a mound.
I thought that they all interconnect underground anyway

Interesting article on the Argentine Ant mega colony that is world wide. They are all related and taking ones from Europe, the US and Japan and putting them together causes no fights, they just act like old pals.

ETA I was wondering how it was possible to kill the colonies by mixing the ants because you would have to put enough invaders in each to kill the queen. Given how big some (most) fire ant mounds are it seems impractical.

Fire ant mixing is a common suggestion for killing fire ant colonies. When mixing colonies, there is potential for workers to be killed, but little chance that the queens will die. In order to kill a fire ant colony, the laying queens must be killed. Generally, disturbed colonies just move to a different location."

When i plow a mound with my lawn mower, does that colony assume their arch nemesis colony has just hit them with some sort of nuke? Hmmmm...

Growing up in Hawaii, we would dump a pile of black ants (or red ants from another nest) on a red ant nest and watch the epic battle. When it was over, the ants would pile up the deceased ants in a burial pile.
