..the death if they meet in the grass outside their fortresses?
Does it matter if it’s different species of ants? Fire, Black, Bulldog, Garden, Carpenter, etc?

Btw, the answer is yes for most. They will fight each other even if they are the same species. Some species apparently will merge colonies and have mega colonies with multiple queens

I experimented with this as a kid. Scooped up ants from one hill and threw them in with the ants on another. They seemed to get along fine.

This is correct. One cheap, environmentally friendly way to get rid of them is to dig a shovel full of dirt from each colony and dump it on the other. The ants take it from there.

When I was a kid I use to shovel ant mounds and put them in other ant mounds and watch them fight.

They must have been close together, my experience was they'd fight. I do know if close together they may be from same colony and sometimes wouldn't do anything when you mixed them.

Yes and some will even capture the workers of the other ant colony and force them to be slave workers in their own colony.
Eventually all of the enslaved ants get fed up and rebel against their captors, killing their offspring and stealing their queen.

Ants are mostly female so they just talk shite about each other behind their back and then pretend to be best friends when they see them out of the mound.
