When I finally puked on the fourth night, I felt an odd sense of pride.

Inside the loud, stuffy ceremony room, people were laughing, crying, chanting, gyrating, and, yes, vomiting, around me. When my time finally comes, I think: Just aim for the bucket and keep your arse above your head like the shaman told you.

I try to wipe my face but can’t grab the tissue paper because it melts every time I reach for it. Nearby, a man starts to scream. I can’t make out what he’s saying on account of the shaman singing beautiful Colombian songs in the other room.

I finish vomiting and start crying and laughing and smiling all at once. Something has been lifted in this “purge,” something dark and deep I was carrying around for years. Relief washes over me, and I slowly make my way back to my mattress on the floor.

For four consecutive nights, a group of 78 of us here at a retreat center in Costa Rica have been drinking a foul-tasting, molasses-like tea containing ayahuasca, a plant concoction that contains the natural hallucinogen known as DMT.

We’re part of a wave of Westerners seeking out ayahuasca as a tool for psychological healing, personal growth, or expanding consciousness.

Youd have already known this if you’ve ever heard more than one episode of JRE

Your OP should say Ayahuasca tourism. It does contain DMT but it’s a totally different animal. DMT is over in 15 minutes. These are multi day ceremonies where tripping your fricking balls off lasts nearly all night under the guidance of some sketchy shaman characters.

It does sound pretty cool, but there are some horror stories of shaman taking advantage of drugged up gringos as well as people straight up dying either because they are on incompatible medications like certain SSRI’s or because they got a bad batch of the brew.

If you go into hallucinogens with that attitude, you ain't going to come out the other side happy.

The one time I did dmt I for sure "travelled" somewhere as a tourist. My body was in my living room, but hell if I can explain where my mind was. Not in this dimension, that's for sure. Never done Ayahuasca, but if it's anything like straight DMT, count me out. My 10 minutes was enough for a lifetime. I don't need hours of that stuff.

It’s way more than that though. Hallucinogens have proven threraputic value when used correctly. There is so much more to perception and existence than this narrow plane of existence.

There are journeys outside of time and space, realms of spirit, than can change how we look at this life.

My doctor put me on Visatril which damn near drove me insane last night. Instead of 1 or 3 bad dreams I had about 20. You can have the bottle if you want.
